One of the harder things for booksellers to admit is the number of acclaimed authors they haven't read. Sure, you can't read everything, but a book like Joseph O'Neill's Netherland (Vintage, $15.95), winner of the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award, certainly blips on the radar. Last week, I enjoyed lunch at Ravenna Third Place Books in Seattle while O'Neill spoke to a small crowd of us readers about his new novel, The Dog (Pantheon, $25.95). Following the often comic adventures of an American called only by his initial, X, in the startling metropolis of Dubai, O'Neill's fourth novel landed on the longlist for the 2014 Man Booker Prize. It was about time I became acquainted with his work.

Karen Carpenter, a producer, director and teacher, a theater-maker for more than 30 years, has been appointed the interim Artistic Director of the William Inge Center for the Arts and the 34th Annual William Inge Theatre Festival. The Inge Festival is the Official Theater Festival of the State of Kansas, hosted on the campus of Independence Community College, which houses the William Inge archives.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Toronto experimental theatre company Kadozuke Kollektif, in partnership withBad New Days, presents the world premiere of Richard III, The Pleasures of Violence, Artistic Director Tatiana Jennings' provocative and innovative multimedia reimagining of the William Shakespeare classic. Richard III previews September 9, opens today, September 10 and runs through to September 28 at Zuke Studios, the company's storefront home in the Junction.

Kansas City Ballet Artistic Director Devon Carney today announced the appointment of three new members of the artistic staff: Grace Holmes as the new Director of Kansas City Ballet School, Kristi Capps as the new Ballet Master and Anthony Krutzkamp as newly created position of Manager of KCB II. Carney also announced eleven new members of the Company, increasing the Company from 28 to 29 members for the 2014-2015 season. He also announced the appointment of four new KCB II dancers, which stands at six members. Carney also announced the creation of a Trainee Program with five students, two selected from Kansas City Ballet School.
