This summer marks another historic milestone for the annual Bard SummerScape festival. For the first time since its founding, this season's focus is on the music and culture of Italy, with seven weeks of music, opera,theater, dance, film, and cabaret keyed to the theme of the 27th Bard Music Festival, "Puccini and His World." This intensive examination of the life and times of Giacomo Puccini opens a window onto Italy's rich musical heritage from Palestrina to Menotti, by way of the most popular and successful - yet, paradoxically, frequently critically underrated - opera composer of all time. Complementing the music festival, some of the Tuscan master's most compelling compatriots provide other key SummerScape highlights. These include a rare, fully staged production of Iris, a forerunner of Madama Butterfly by Puccini's close contemporary Pietro Mascagni; the world premiere of Demolishing Everything with Amazing Speed, four newly unearthed puppet plays from leading Italian Futurist Fortunato Depero, as reimagined by Dan Hurlin;the world premiere of Fantasque, a new ballet set to the music of Respighi and Rossini by John Heginbotham and Amy Trompetter; a film series on "Puccini and the Operatic Impulse in Cinema"; and the return of Bard's authentic and sensationally popularSpiegeltent,hosted by the inimitable Mx. Justin Vivian Bond. Taking place between July 1 and August 14 in the Frank Gehry-designed Richard B. 'The New World Symphony: Dvorak in America' is a puppet and object theater work examining the influence of African-American and Native American music upon the great 19th-century Czech composer Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904). The piece is written and directed by Vit Horejš and performed by Czechoslovak American Marionette Theatre. It traces how Dvorak helped America accept its beautiful multicultural musical traditions by his enthusiasm for African-American and Native American music during his short but influential time in the USA. La MaMa Theatre will present the play's world premiere run March 10 to 27, 2016 in its Ellen Stewart Theatre, 66 East 4th Street (East Village). Composer and Musical Director is saxophonist James Brandon Lewis.

San Francisco Opera General Director David Gockley and Music Director Nicola Luisotti today announced the Company's 2016–17 Season repertory and roster of international guest artists, conductors and creative teams scheduled to appear at the War Memorial Opera House, as well as initial programming for SF Opera Lab 2017 presentations at the Diane B. Wilsey Center for Opera's Taube Atrium Theater. The Company's 94th Season will also mark Matthew Shilvock's inaugural year as San Francisco Opera's new general director, succeeding his mentor and internationally respected impresario, David Gockley, who will step down on July 31, 2016.

The Jewish Museum presents The Wind Up: The Power of Pictures, the next in its popular series of after-hours events, on Thursday, November 19 from 8pm to 11pm. Featuring live music, a photo booth, and an open bar with beer, wine, and vodka, The Wind Up is inspired by The Power of Pictures: Early Soviet Photography, Early Soviet Film, which explores how early modernist photography influenced a new Soviet style while energizing and expanding the nature of the medium.  The evening includes a performance by the raucous dance band Romashka, fronted by Lithuanian-born singer Inna Barmash, and a set by DJ Spinach, known for his unique mixture of world music sounds.  There will also be special exhibition tours of The Power of Pictures at 8:30pm and 9:30pm.

The kids indie rock band Josh & The Jamtones will perform at the Jewish Museum on Sunday, December 7 at 11:30 am. Fronted by singer/songwriter Josh Shriber and drummer/producer Patrick Hanlin, their interactive concerts get crowds of any age moving their bodies and singing along. Josh seamlessly blends roots/reggae/ska stylings, feel-good pop, folk punk, country ballads, New Orleans-style street music and kid-friendly improv comedy. The concert will feature songs from The Jamtones' two critically-acclaimed family records, Jump Up and Bear Hunt!

Houston Ballet will give six performances of the program in the Brown Theater at Wortham Theater Center.

New York City Ballet's 2013-14 Season at Lincoln Center will feature performances of 50 ballets in celebration of New York City Ballet's 50th anniversary at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, which has been the Company's home since the New York State Theater (now the David H. Beginning on March 15, 2013, The Jewish Museum will present As it were ... So to speak: A Museum Collection in Dialogue with Barbara Bloom. Artist Barbara Bloom has devoted her career to questioning the ways we perceive and value objects. With a light touch and subtle wit, she divines the meanings encoded in the things with which we surround ourselves. The Jewish Museum invited Bloom to create an installation drawn from its 25,000 works of ceremonial, decorative, and fine art. Her presentation sets a selection of over 270 pieces in unconventional contexts, and offers visitors new ways to view the Museum and its holdings. As it were ... So to speak: A Museum Collection in Dialogue with Barbara Bloom will be on view through August 4, 2013.

A cast boasting a wealth of West End musical talent has been announced for The Hard Boiled Egg and the Wasp, an entirely original musical about the legendary English comedian Dan Leno written by actor, singer-writer and voiceover artist, Jonathan Kydd and Andy Street, one of the leading figures in British and American television music.

In conjunction with the new exhibition, Edouard Vuillard: A Painter and His Muses, 1890-1940, The Jewish Museum is presenting five related lectures. Highlights include a three-part daytime lecture series today, May 7, May 21 and June 4, featuring historian Jane Becker and Vuillard exhibition curator Stephen Brown; artist Lisa Yuskavage in conversation with Norman Kleeblatt, The Jewish Museum's Chief Curator, about Vuillard's influence on contemporary art, on Thursday, May 24; and a discussion of Vuillard's career with The Art Institute of Chicago curator Gloria Groom on Thursday, May 31.

Following the Brighton Beach and Downtown Brooklyn series, the Brooklyn Phil concludes its 2011-12 relaunch season with three free concerts in the heart of BED-STUY, in partnership with Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation and Brooklyn Public Library.
