Temple Shalom Java Cafe invites all to a community event on March 19th at 10:00 AM at 223 Valley Road, Middletown, RI. Join in welcoming Rhode Island novelist Dale Martellino to discuss her book 'Precious Jewels.'
Book Synopsis: Prague is being torn apart by Hitler's army. The Jewish community is being shipped off to concentration and extermination camps.
One young woman, Katarina, wants to help them. She has a position in the government social work office and forms an alliance with her superior, Mademoiselle Zelinsky.
Meanwhile, Jewish underground members have secretly connected with the naïve Katarina. Zelinsky, however, has an agenda of her own - and she may lead the entire operation to ruin.
Decades later, another young woman, Delilah, visits Tuscany, Italy. As she is touring the countryside with her friends and fiancé, she gets into a horrific car accident. Delilah is lucky there happens to be a doctor among the crowd of onlookers. He takes her to the convent of La Certosa di Pontignano to recover, where she meets Sister Katarina. Sister Katarina tells Delilah the story of the other Katarina and makes an unexpected connection with the young woman.
The author blends history, suspense and romance in an intricate tale. She addresses the Christian, Jewish and Muslim European communities and modern issues of identity and devotion. The horrors of the Holocaust have left scars that will never be forgotten, but we should also celebrate the heroes who stood up to genocide and tyranny.

A gripping struggle to hold on to morality during the hardest of times. Experience Felix Mitterer's enthralling drama based on the life and death of Franz Jagerstatter (1907-1943), an Austrian farmer who refused to fight on behalf of Hitler because of his faith, morals and ideals. Mitterer depicts Franz, who was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007, as a courageous but insecure human being - and not at all as a saint.

Never having seen this on stage but having read the novella some time ago, at the time acknowledging it as one of the most memorable stories I have ever read, seeing Steinbeck's words and emotions transposed on stage by the Monomoy Theatre, bringing to the life this simultaneously sad and touchingly hopeful plot by such talented individuals, really made the impact of Of Mice and Men that much stronger. In my opinion, it enhances this plot to the extent of it being particularly memorable for some time to come for all who are fortunate enough to see this production.
