As we approach the 50th Anniversary of the passage of New York City's Landmarks Law in 2015, it is especially timely that we have the privilege to announce Meenakshi Srinivasan, Chair of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, as the Honorary Chair of A Christmas Carol at the Merchant's House Benefit Gala. The Merchant's House was the first building designated a landmark in the Borough of Manhattan at the inaugural meeting of the Landmarks Preservation Commission in September 1965.

This coming November, Birmingham Hippodrome will present Wagner's epic The Ring Cycle in its entirety. Conducted by Maestro Valery Gergiev with his world-famous Mariinsky Opera, it is the only UK date in 2014.

Canadian-based Monlove Enterprises today announced that tickets to the world premiere of N THE QUEEN OF PARIS at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto will go on sale on September 24, 2014. The new musical, which will open exactly one year later, was inspired by the Champagne atmosphere and rags-to-riches romance of Emile Zola's classic novel Nana with its gaslight glimpses into the backstage world of Parisian theatres, 'Joie de vivre' and courtesans' salons.

Charles Dickens' last novel, unfinished at the time of his death in 1870, supplied the story for the musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood which won five Tony Awards when it first premiered in 1985. Although it won for Best Book and Best Score, I hardly find either completely satisfying. On the musical side, it's very much like operetta, with pretty singing, but with only one memorable song 'Don't Quit While You're Ahead'. As far as the book is concerned, it is a lengthy attempt to complete Dickens' story by allowing the audience to have its say...certainly a novel concept in 1985. Was he murdered? Was he in fact alive at the end? You decide! On the positive side, it is creative and very theatrical as a play within a play encouraging grande overplaying by the company of actors, and making it an assuredly fun entertainment. Despite mixed feelings about the play, I cannot but laud the current production at Actors Coop which is magnificently staged by director Stephen Van Dorn, wonderfully choreographed by Julie Hall and with an astounding ensemble... through October 26.

It's kind of gutsy to feature an alternative musical treatment of Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera when its iconic award-winning Andrew Lloyd Weber namesake is liable to overshadow any such effort, but that's what Hale Centre Theatre has done, and with great success, in its season opener, Phantom.

Dates and show times for this popular Shakespearean comedy are: Todays, June 13 and June 20 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, June 14 and June 21 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, June 15 and 22 at 2 p.m. A reception with the cast and crew will follow the opening night performance on June 13. Long Beach Playhouse audiences are in for a very original and unique treat because opening this weekend in the Studio Theatre is a production called Chekov Shorts: The Proposal and The Bear. Diane Benedict is not only the director for the show but has translated these two one act plays from Russian to English. Interestingly, she has interspersed in the middle of these two pieces an adaptation (again her translation) of one of Chekov's short stories, The Bet that she turned into another one act play. She chose these three pieces because of the vaudevillian nature of the stories. We tend to associate Chekov with his more serious plays like-The Three Sisters, The Seagull, The Cherry Orchard, etc., but he wrote wonderful, rich comedies that are exemplified in this production. Setting for The Bear is in the Ural Mountains on November 14, 1880. The Proposal is set near Moscow on November 13, 1885, and The Bet, set in St. Petersburg, spans the years from 1870 to 1885.
