Dominique Lévy to Display Robert Motherwell Gallery Exhibition, 11/4

New York, NY...Beginning November 4, 2015, Dominique Lévy will present Robert Motherwell: Elegy to the Spanish Republic, the first gallery exhibition in over twenty years to offer a fresh survey of the monumental series that marked a pivotal moment in the history of modern art. Begun in 1948, Motherwell's Elegies were intended as public laments, deeply political in their condemnation of the violence of the Spanish Civil War and the isolationist fascism of General Francisco Franco. The artist also described them as “general metaphors of the contrast between life and death, and their interrelation.” Returning again and again to this central preoccupation of his oeuvre over the course of decades, Motherwell would ultimately create more than 250 paintings and works on paper exploring the subject. The last work in the series, titled Mourning Elegy, was completed only months before his death in 1991. In their implicit references to politics, psychology, literature, and poetry, the Elegies constructed a bridge between Surrealism and the new style of painting emerging at the same time: Abstract Expressionism.  (more...)

Soho Rep Extends 10 OUT OF 12

In response to popular demand, Soho Rep., in association with John Adrian Selzer, extends the world premiere of 10 out of 12 by Anne Washburn (Mr. Burns) to July 5. The production, which opens on June 10, reunites the playwright with the Obie Award-winning director Les Waters, Artistic Director at Actors Theatre of Louisville. In 10 out of 12, a company of theatre artists is engaged in the very peculiar-and uniquely impossible-task of making a new play. Directed by The Pearl Theatre's Artistic Director Hal Brooks, The Dindong follows the misadventures of one madcap night in a Paris Hotel, dancing us into a world where opening the wrong door in the dark of night leads to mayhem, laughter and, maybe, a few home truths about the secrets to a happy marriage. Ain Gordon World Premiere Set for Painted Bride Arts Center

1972: Dr. John Fryer dons an oversize tuxedo and rubber joke shop mask to become Dr. Henry Anonymous and confront the American Psychiatric Association with these words: 'I am a homosexual, I am a psychiatrist.' The latest work by renowned theatre artist Ain Gordon, 217 Boxes of Dr. Henry Anonymous, is a new play drawn from the 217 boxes of archive materials from national LGBT activist of Dr. John Fryer discovered by Ain Gordon during his two-year embedded artist status at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP). This new work is set to run, May 5-7, at the Painted Bride Arts Center, 230 Vine Street. All performances are at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $20. Dallas Theater Center Presents Rolling World Premiere of COLOSSAL, Now thru 5/3

?Dallas Theater Center announced today complete details for the rolling world premiere of Colossal, a new play by Andrew Hinderaker. DTC artistic director Kevin Moriarty directs the Kennedy Center Jean Kennedy Smith Playwriting Award-winning play, which is choreographed by founder and artistic director of Dark Circles Contemporary Dance Joshua L. Peugh. Colossal begins with previews tonight, April 2 with a Pay-What-You-Can performance and runs through Sunday, May 3. (more...)
