BWW Review: CLARENCE DARROW at Rubicon Theatre Company
by Cary Ginell - Jun 4, 2016

It's funny how many shows we've seen recently that bring to mind concepts evident in the current election season. In In the Heights, it was the plight of immigrants trying to make lives for themselves in America, in Amadeus, it was a lead character with an obsessive personality, and in Ragtime, it was a character who seeks justice for a racially-based assault. In David W. Rintels' one-man play, Clarence Darrow, which made its debut last weekend at the Rubicon Theatre Company, reexamines the life of a man whose philosophy of democratic socialism reflects the political philosophy of Democratic challenger, Senator Bernie Sanders.

BWW Review: MOTOWN at the Paramount is a Truncated, Desperately Spun Disappointment
by Jay Irwin - Jun 1, 2016

That old idiom, "History is written by the victors" kept ringing in my head last night as I watched the National Touring Company of "Motown: The Musical" at the Paramount Theatre. Or rather one could say, "History is written by the one telling it." This retelling of the life of Berry Gordy and his creation of Motown Records with a book written by Berry Gordy based on the autobiography by Berry Gordy comes across like a jock in the locker room bragging about all his conquests. But with such bad writing and storytelling coupled with an overabundance of half songs the show feels like a bunch of skewed half-truths and amounts to a tepid and forced evening.

BWW Review: WAR OF THE WORLDS at Scena Theatre Will Have You On the Edge of Your Seat
by Jeffrey Walker - May 20, 2016

Taking a trip to the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street will also transport you to a time when radio was king and one of the princes of the medium was the maverick actor-director Orson Welles. Welles and his Mercury Theatre Company on the Air produced a series of classic dramas on CBS Radio in the 1930s. Their most infamous broadcast was their adaptation of the H.G. Wells scifi classic "The War of the Worlds, sent over the airwaves on October 30, 1938 from New York City. That historic and iconic radio play has been translated to a new medium - the stage - by Scena Theatre in a riveting adaptation by Robert McNamara who also directed the production. Crackling with the excitement of live radio, Scena captures the ingenuity, talent and drama of that night.

BWW Interview: Michigan Native Teri Hansen Says THE SOUND OF MUSIC Will Fill Your Heart with Joy at Fisher Theatre!
by Katie Laban - May 9, 2016

Michigan native Teri Hansen loves performing in The Sound of Music because the audiences are just as emotionally involved in the show as she is. "When the curtain goes up, there is an audible gasp because of this gorgeous set and beautiful start," she said. "Then we really start to tell this tale; this dangerous and urgent story, yet a love story as well. You can feel the audience right at the beginning of the show and during it they are edging forward on their seats until the end when they are on their feet going right over the mountain with the Von Trapp family."
