One Way Trip to Mars - A Rock Opera makes its world theatrical premiere at the Waterville Opera House August 24 through 27. One Way Trip to Mars is a Broadway bound spectacular, musical and cinematic production that takes audiences on a virtual journey into space and the surface of Mars. The story is told entirely through songs written by Maine musicians Peter Alexander and Johannah Harkness and is directed by Dennis St. Pierre. International recording sensation Fantine will star as "Casssandra," the lead female role and is joined on stage by a cast of professional New York actors, and supported by an 11-piece rock orchestra. According to a recent interview with Whatsonstage, creator Tim Rice is hard at work on a revised version of the original 1986 show. 'We've got a new team in who helped to restructure the storyline and it seemed to work really well as a tabletop production, but the plan is to bring it to Broadway late next year,' says Rice.

Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose will perform on Friday, May 26th at the SF International Arts Festival, presenting Sanchaari - Elaboration in the South Indian classical dance style, Bharatanatyam.   The traditional framework of the 2000 year old classical Bharatanatyam dance has engendered many interpretations through its renaissance period of the early 20th century to the present time. 'Sanchaari Bhava', is a term that denotes the embellishment of the literal meaning of texts through the individual dancer's imagination, skill, and experience.   This production takes the audience on a journey through traditional solo dance pieces performed by dancers in the temples prior to the 20th century to the varied faces of contemporary Bharatanatyam.
