The Grand Theatre is thrilled to announce a first-time collaboration with the American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.), bringing A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS to the Spriet Stage. This acclaimed stage adaptation, based on the award-winning novel by Khaled Hosseini, had its world premiere in San Francisco in July 2016 and became the bestselling production in A.C.T.'s history. The Grand's production will premiere an all new, all Canadian cast with original staging by A.C.T. Artistic Director Carey Perloff. Blue Note Hawaii welcomes some of music's most renowned artists this month, continuing the Hawaii News Now Jazz Legends series with Tony and GRAMMY (R) Award-winning jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and epic drummer Billy Cobham. Jazz virtuoso guitarist Earl Klugh returns, jazz fusion saxophonist Boney James and reggae giants Big Mountain close the month. Local artists this month include Kuana Torres Kahele, Josh Kaye and Friends featuring Riya Davis in a tribute to Jill Scott, a tribute to the Miles Davis First Great Quintet with DeShannon Higa & QuadPod, Amy Hanaiali'i, and a tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim with Sandy Tsukiyama and friends. Mike Lewis will present tribute shows to Duke Ellington and Natalie Cole featuring songstress Ginai and John Kolivas will host a tribute to the music of Stevie Wonder. The genre-bending Augie Rey makes his Blue Note Hawaii debut and Tavana returns to the stage by popular demand.

The first 2018 Seasonal Maui Outstanding Piano Amateurs Festival, February 16-18 was a complete delight for both artists and audience. The festival showcases the exceptional artistic talent of Maui residents with guest performances by others from neighboring islands. It is produced by Damira (Mira) Feldman, an internationally recognized pianist and educator, who moved to Maui one year ago. This March, Anne-Sophie Mutter returns to the United States with her longtime collaborator pianist Lambert Orkis in a recital tour celebrating the 85th birthday of Krzysztof Penderecki. The two-date tour begins on Friday, March 2 at 7:30 PM in Weill Hall at the Green Music Center in Rohnert Park, CA. Mutter and Orkis then travel to Carnegie Hall for the second recital on Sunday, March 4 at 2:00 PM in Stern Auditorium, which will feature the world premiere of Andre Previn's The Fifth Season for Violin and Piano.

Tommy Bolin was born to Barb and Rich Bolin in Sioux City, Iowa, August 3 1951. At age five (!) Rich, took him to see Elvis Presley LIVE and Tommy's path, as it turns out, was set. The very blue collar Bolin family did all they could for Tommy, including buying him his first guitar, the obligatory Sears Silver-tone. His first Sioux City teen band was The Miserlous, followed in 1964 at age 13, by Denny and The Triumphs, which morphed into Patch of Blue. In 1999, they were was inducted in the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. After leaving Patch of Blue, Tommy gigged with The Chateaux, based in Vermillion, South Dakota, where he met their drummer, Bobby Berge. It was at a gig with them there they he met John Tesar, who wrote lyrics for Tommy throughout his career. But Tommy wasn't "fitting in" at school. After being suspended from Central High School for his hair being too long, then cutting it short, and still being suspended, Barb and Rich supported 16 year old Tommy in leaving Sioux City. A one way bus ticket to Denver, Colorado was all he needed to start his new musical career.

Kronos Quartet/Kronos Performing Arts Association (KPAA) is proud to announce the fourth group of composers for Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire. Launched in 2015, Kronos' Fifty for the Future is an exciting partnership with Carnegie Hall and others to create 50 new works - by 25 women and 25 men - expressly for the training of students and emerging professionals. Each year, ten composers are announced. As ever, scores, parts, recordings, videos, and other learning materials for the compositions will be offered free of charge online at kronosquartet.org/fifty-for-the-future. 

Final casting has been announced for the all-star reading of William Goldman's screenplay for All The President's Men scheduled to take place this Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the John Ferraro Council Chamber of Los Angeles City Hall.

Quality Hill Playhouse will pay tribute to Harold Arlen, the man who brought the blues to the Great American Songbook, in THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC, an original cabaret revue which opened on January 19.

Howl! Happening is pleased to present a rare look into the heart and art of a consummate creator: John Kelly's Sideways into the Shadows. Resonating and in conversation with Kelly's major new performance work Time No Line at La MaMa (February 22 March 11, 2018), Sideways into the Shadows is a journey through Kelly's creative life that exposes both the unfolding of his artistic process and the generational rupture and emotional cost of the AIDS pandemic.

Mixing the joy and melancholy for Cuba's past with the exuberant sounds of contemporary performance, the 17-piece Afro-Cuban All-Stars bring the next generation of Cuban music to life on stage. In addition, the evening will also feature The Soraya debut of the Havana-based Harold L pez-Nussa Trio, which will open the evening.

In 1976, Thelonious Monk stepped off the bandstand at the Newport Jazz Festival and never set foot on the stage again. His closest circle of friends and family, bandmates and patrons remembered the last six years of his life, until his death at he age of 65 with a peculiar, spiritual insight. Monk simply stopped playing altogether. His musical soul had departed before his body finally succumbed to death in 1982, the very morning his go-to drummer Ben Riley began recording a tribute album in his name to try and tempt him to return to music.
