This ingenious comedy has delighted over 3 million people worldwide with its quintessentially plucky spirit and dashing sense of fun and previously played for almost 10 years in the West End.
Follow the incredible adventures of our handsome hero Richard Hannay, complete with stiff-upper-lip, British gung-ho and pencil moustache as he encounters dastardly murders, double-crossing secret agents, and, of course, devastatingly beautiful women.
This wonderfully inventive and gripping comedy thriller features four fearless actors, playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action.

The 39 Steps review – comic homage to Hitchcock thriller goes off the rails

The villains’ machinations remain locked away in a comedy world, without gaining any modern resonance, and there is little sense of Hitchcock’s 30s London populated by bobbies and milkmen. In a show that needs more polished physical comedy, Eugene McCoy stands out for his vivid interpretations. Maddie Rice and Safeena Ladha juggle accents and, like Tom Byrne as Hannay, make a jolly stab at it but the result can sometimes feel less like a thrilling race against the clock and more of a garbled rush.

Ultimately, if you're after a genuine white-knuckle ride of a crime thriller, The 39 Steps is not it. The narrative doesn't so much escalate into giddy suspension, as merrily skip from one scene to the next. Still, the play remains a showpiece of low budget stage buffoonery, silly voices and whip-smart clowning. More than anything else, it will make you smile. And if that's your jam, then step to it and get yourself a ticket.

Patrick Barlow’s parody The 39 Steps creaks and groans in places but still has plenty of laughs. Wrapped around the central character of Richard Hannay, the story unfurls as we see him accused of murder, run from the police and then defeat a foreign cabal of spies.

The current UK Tour cast of the Tony and Olivier Award-winning comedy, THE 39 STEPS, will appear in the strictly limited West End season at the Trafalgar Theatre from 16 August to 28 September, with an opening night on Monday 19 August.
