The Athena Film Festival (AFF) at Barnard College announced today its film slate, including opening night, closing night, and centerpiece films, as well as additional programming for the 2019 festival. The ninth annual festival, co-founded by the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College and Women and Hollywood, will take place February 28 to March 3, 2019, at Barnard College in New York City. AFF showcases films, television and content that tell the extraordinary stories of fierce and fearless female leaders from all walks of life. Stories of ambition, courage, and resilience amplify the voices of strong, bold women, curating a public discourse on gender equality, and changing the cultural conventions surrounding leadership.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo Comes to Boulder Theater This March

South Africa's Ladysmith Black Mambazo was founded in the early 1960s by Joseph Shabalala, then a teenage farm boy living on the lands just outside the small town of Ladysmith, in the province of kwaZulu Natal, halfway between Johannesburg and Durban. Joseph used his hometown's name to honor his family's history. Joseph added to his group's name the word Black in reference to the black oxen, the strongest of all farm animals. Mambazo is the Zulu word for chopping axe, a symbol of the group's vocal ability to clear the path to success.

Mercury Theater Chicago's AVENUE Q Will Close December 30

A mainstay of the Belmont Theater District, Mercury Theater Chicago's critically acclaimed production of AVENUE Q moves into its final weeks with a closing date of December 30. With incredible runs on the Mercury stage in 2014 and 2018, this lovingly revived Broadway musical comedy appealed to the heart and humor of more than 40,000 audience members, earning widespread critical acclaim with coverage from the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, WTTW's "Chicago Tonight" and WGN Radio, and awards from Broadway World and the Joseph Jefferson awards, including 12 Broadway World Award nominations for the 2018 production. By its closing date, AVENUE Q will have played 355 performances over 12 months, placing it as one of the longest-running homegrown musicals in Chicago history.

Natalia Hills, Artistic Director/Choreographer and Creator of Tangueros del Sur's "Romper el Piso," or "Break the Floor," is from a long line of generations of tango dancers. She was an original member of the phenomenal Broadway Show "Forever Tango," which garnered many accolades in the mid-nineties. She founded this company in 2009. They have performed all over the world, most lately this year in Greece, performing in 18 of the most ancient theaters in Greece. Her mission through this performance is to show the evolvement of Argentine tango from the Afro-Argentine beginning to the many influences of different musical cultures and artists that shaped the dance elements that you see today, but still to pay homage to the roots of the dance and to keep the origins sacred and preserve the essence of tradition.

Hey Nonny Celebrates Its Official Grand Opening Weekend In Arlington Heights With Eric Lindell Concert

Chicagoland's newest music venue and gastropub, Hey Nonny, 10 S. Vail Ave., Arlington Heights, has officially opened to the public. Kicking off its grand opening celebration on Friday, October 26, Hey Nonny will present two shows by well-known Chicago singer-songwriter Andrew Belle, the 2009 MTV Chicago Breakout Artist of the Year. Belle's first show is sold out, but some tickets are still available for the 9:30 p.m. show. World-famous Louisiana zydeco ace C.J. Chenier, son of the late Clifton Chenier, will continue the grand opening on Saturday, October 27. In its intimate listening room, Hey Nonny presents the best Chicago and touring musicians playing jazz, rock, blues, country, reggae, classical, and folk in ticketed concerts six nights a week. Farm-to-table cuisine is featured in the Hey Nonny gastropub.

Portland Stage Will Stage the World Premiere of REFUGE MALJA by Bess Welden with Arabic Translation by Ali Al-Mshakheel begins Oct 30 through Nov 18, opens for reviewers Friday Nov 2, 2018. When a Jewish-American war photographer feels compelled to assist a young refugee who steps in front of her camera, she calls an old friend to translate but hesitates to reveal why she is so drawn to the boy. This poetic, decade-spanning drama explores how we each define and find our own malja (refuge). Affiliate Artist Bess Welden's Refuge Malja was developed as part of the 2017 Little Festival of the Unexpected and was subsequently workshopped in the Studio Series in January of 2018. Refuge Malja is made possible with support from the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Arts Commission.
