Young Marlow, on his way to meet the match his father has chosen for him, arrives at a somewhat dilapidated country house and mistakes it for an inn. From there, Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer (1773) is a riotous jaunt of mistaken identity, practical jokes, and romantic shenanigans. At once both a charming love story and witty satire of romance, class, and station, it is a laughing comedy that has delighted audiences for over 230 years.

She Stoops To Conquer is one of the crown jewels of the British theatrical repertory. (Shakespeare notwithstanding.) This classic comedy has delighted audiences around the world for almost 250 years with its mix of farce, cheek and innuendo. It can also stake a meaningful claim to being the forerunner of such diverse entertainments as the Marx Brothers, Monty Python, Jerry Seinfeld and innumerable TV family sitcoms.

It can also stake a meaningful claim to being the forerunner of such diverse entertainments as the Marx Brothers, Monty Python, Jerry Seinfeld and innumerable TV family sitcoms. Written in 1773, She Stoops To Conquer takes place at a rundown manor house in the English countryside. Mr. Hardcastle (Neil Faulconbridge) and Mrs. Hardcastle (Colleen McClure) argue over soup as they await the arrival of Charles Marlow (Tim Riley) a suitor to their daughter Kate (Jessica Osbourne). Little do they realize that before the night is over their house, their lives and all of their plans will be turned upside down, inside out, and flown up the chimney. The agent of all this mayhem is Tony Lumpkin (Tim Crofton). Tony is a world-class rascal, rogue and reprobate who delights in being the spoon that stirs the pot.

The first play of Independent Shakespeare Co.'s season is....Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer or The Mistakes of the Night. It's not a play by Shakespeare, but it shares traits with Shakespeare's great comedies: eccentric characters, absurdly comic situations, and deep warmth. First performed in 1773, it was an immediate success.

No one writes a finely-crafted comedy like the British playwrights of the Restoration and 18th Century. Oliver Goldsmith's 1773 She Stoops to Conquer, the current production at Chapel Hill's Deep Dish Theater Company, is certainly no exception. It is the perfect balance of deception and misunderstanding. The best thing about it is that all of the storylines do not unravel at once, and the truth is revealed slowly, making the comic suspense all the more wonderful.
