Straight No Chaser Announce ONE SHOT TOUR

Atlantic Records recording group Straight No Chaser has announced early details of their upcoming “One Shot Tour” with dates in the US and Europe. The European leg kicks off on September 12th at the House of Culture in Helsinki, Finland with dates through the month wrapping on September 25th at Vicar Street in Dublin, Ireland. The North American leg of the “One Shot Tour” will begin on October 26th at the Mystic Lake Showroom in Prior Lake, MN and continues through the holiday season, wrapping up on December 31st at McCaw Hall in Seattle, WA. The Motor Company Launches New Site Specific Laundry Play Festival!

LAUNDRYFEST will make its world premiere at The Soap Box, 110 Saratoga Ave, Brooklyn NY 11233. The show will be comprised of site specific and site responsive pieces in an actual laundromat. The festival, produced by The Motor Company (Lillian Meredith, Artistic Director; Jessica Schmidt, Producing Director), will feature new short plays and musicals by Sean Pollock, Billy Recce, Ben Holbrook and Cherry Lou Sy. Directors include NJ Agwuna, David Kahawaii, Phoebe Padget, and Lillian Meredith. The festival is co-curated and co-produced by Sean Pollock. The performance schedule is Friday, June 8th, Saturday June 9th, Friday, June 15th, and Saturday June 16th at 9:00PM; Sunday June 10th and Sunday June 17th at 7:00PM. BSO Music Director Finalist Bobby Collins leads the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra's season finale on June 1 and 3. The openings of Shostakovich's Violin Concerto and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 could not be more dissimilar. Written just before Stalin's death, Shostakovich's concerto opens with the low strings brooding with tones that barely suggest a melody. Elsewhere in the concerto, Shostakovich spells out his own name in musical notation using German transliteration. The pitches D-E-flat-C-B (or, DSCH) cry out with sarcasm and fierce wit. This is a titanic concerto for violinists, and superstar Rachell Ellen Wong will hold you spellbound with her virtuosity and sensitivity. (more...)

Accelerating his arrival as Music Director by two seasons, Yannick Nezet-Seguin will take up the post in time for the start of the Metropolitan Opera's 2018-19 season, it was announced today. By freeing up some guest conducting weeks in his busy calendar in both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, Nezet-Seguin will now be able to conduct three operas and two Met Orchestra concerts at Carnegie Hall in each of those seasons, instead of the two operas per season originally scheduled. With the assumption of the Music Director title in the fall of 2018, Nezet-Seguin will also be taking on the full artistic responsibilities for the orchestra, chorus, and music staff. His full-time collaboration with Met General Manager Peter Gelb on all other artistic matters will also begin at that time. As previously announced, Nezet-Seguin will begin conducting a minimum of five operas per season starting with the 2020-21 season. (more...)

Montalvo Celebrates New Exhibits with Free 'Art on the Grounds'

On April 26 Jazz at the Spring invites you on a sonic joyride with Ornettiquette a stellar band formed by trumpeter Chris Pasin to honor the music of Ornette Coleman, one of the most powerful and creative innovators in the history of jazz. During his career Ornette Coleman, who in 2007 won the Pulitzer Prize for his album "Sound Grammar," overturned the structure of be-bop. Be-bop is a style of jazz which uses the architecture of an underlying tune from the American Songbook as the structure for wide ranging improvised solos. Coleman's idea was to explore melody and do away with the idea of a fixed series of chords. He didn't do away with harmony, but rather created melodies with amazing harmonic implications as the platform for improvisation. Coleman broke through style and structure to seek sound. (more...)

Celebrated Canadian Folk/Roots Artist and Mental Health Advocate Séan McCann Announces First US Solo Tour

Acclaimed singer-songwriter, JUNO Award nominee, and mental health advocate, Séan McCann, has had quite a journey.  As a founding member of multi-platinum internationally renowned folk group Great Big Sea, Séan chose to forge his own path five years ago and use his music to help him heal from an alcohol addiction that masked his secret of sexual abuse during his teens.  He released his fifth solo album, 'There's a Place', in 2017, which was described by David Reed of the 'Belleville Intelligencer' as '...an almost prayer-like reflection on his journey. 'There's a Place' is hopeful and empowering....'  Now Séan is taking his music and his message on the road and returning to his traditional music roots embarking on his first solo US tour dates in mid-May.  'The US has always held a special place in my heart as a touring musician and the people were always very supportive of Great Big Sea', he says.  'I even married an American! Heading back with my guitar for my first ever solo tour has been a long time coming and I am very excited to reconnect with all the friends I've made through the years and sing some songs with them.'
