The Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition is the world's most visible jazz vocal competition of its kind and provides a platform for one outstanding female singer to launch a career in the music industry. The competition started in 2012 and was co-produced by NJPAC and JAZZ ROOTS, a Larry Rosen Production. Jazz fans are invited to review and vote for entries online; then five finalists are selected for a live performance at NJPAC as part of the TD James Moody Jazz Festival, where a panel of expert judges decides the recipient of the SASSY Award.

Under the baton of guest conductor Hugh Wolff and with guest pianist Andre Watts, the Utah Symphony will perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. Commonly called 'Emperor,' this composition is bookended with two works by the great American composer Aaron Copland, 'Fanfare for the Common Man' and Symphony No. 3 this weekend, March 6 and 7 at 8 p. m. in Abravanel Hall.

Jaap van Zweden - music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic as well as former concertmaster of Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - will return to the New York Philharmonic for the first time since his debut in April 2012 to conduct two weeks of concerts. In the first program, Mr. van Zweden will conduct Mozart's Sinfonia concertante for Violin and Viola, featuring Acting Concertmaster Sheryl Staples and Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps, and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8, tonight, November 20, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 21 at 2:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 22 at 8:00 p.m.

Julia Adolphe and Melody Eötvös will receive orchestral commissions of $15,000 each as part of a new initiative to increase opportunities for women composers, the League of American Orchestras, American Composers Orchestra, and EarShot have announced. Howard Hawks, the quintessential Hollywood director known for his mastery of many genres, will be the subject of a complete retrospective at Museum of the Moving Image from September 7 through November 10, 2013. The Museum will present 39 features. All of the films will be shown in 35mm-many in stunning restorations-except for Red Line 7000, which will be shown in 16mm.

19 American orchestras will be recognized with 2012-13 ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming today at the League of American Orchestras' 68th National Conference in St. Louis. ASCAP and the League present the awards each year to orchestras of all sizes for programs that challenge the audience, build the repertoire, and increase interest in music of our time. Approximately $725,000 has been bestowed on orchestras since the awards were established in 1947.
