When Jerry Herman was pegged by producer Gerard Oestreicher to write the score for a Broadway musical set in the fledgling State of Israel, he was a 28-year-old composer/lyricist mostly known for writing clever lyrics and snazzy tunes for Greenwich Village topical reviews like NIGHTCAP and PARADE. But now, instead of writing for hip, downtown performers like Charles Nelson Reilly and Dody Goodman, he'd be penning a romantic score for opera stars Mimi Benzell and Robert Weede, with special comic relief material for Yiddish Theatre legend Molly Picon.

The York Theatre Company, dedicated to the development of new musicals and the preservation of musical gems from the past, presents the first of three shows in the Winter 2017 Musicals in Mufti Series: the 1961 musical Milk and Honey, with book by Don Appell, and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Interim Executive Director; David McCoy, Chairman of the Board), dedicated to the development of new musicals and the preservation of musical gems from the past, has announced American operatic bass-baritone Mark Delavan (Tosca), Broadway's Alix Korey (Fiddler on the Roof) and Anne Runolfsson (The Phantom of the Opera) will lead the cast of the 1961 musical Milk and Honey.

Still witty, smart and funny at 95 years of age, the legendary comic Marty Allen was hosted (not roasted) at a Friars Club lunch.  Emmy Award winning Friar Bill Boggs interviewed Marty about his long career in show business.  Marty worked as an opening act for stars such as Sarah Vaughan, Eydie Gorme and Nat King Cole gained enormous fame when he teamed up with singer Steve Rossi and made 44 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.  In 1961 and 1962 Allen appeared on Broadway in Let It Ride! at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre and then went on to perform in the pre-Broadway tour and Broadway performances of I Had A Ball.

The Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts (SBCPA) is pleased to announce the return of The Elmer Bernstein Memorial Film Series for its third season.  This year's series will launch with a screening of the comedy classic, Animal House, on Monday, August 29, 2016 at 7pm.
