Within the first 20 minutes of Lesley Storm's Black Ciffon, Alicia asks a?oeIs there enough gin?a?? Finally, I thought, a character I could get behind. But as Alicia's Freudian feelings for her son were diagnosed, I found that my initial assessments weren't quite apt. A smile broke on my face, offering a personal moment of levity during an otherwise middling play.

Sir John Eliot Gardiner (photo: Chris Christodolou for the BBC Proms) When the Berlioz Series 2018 - their transatlantic tour in anticipation of the composer's 150th anniversary - took Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique to London's BBC Proms last month, the critical response was euphoric. Their performance scored five-star reviews in The Times of London, the Arts Desk, and the Financial Times, which concluded: 'Berlioz has no idea what he missed.' Now the series sees the orchestra and Gardiner - the winner of more Gramophone Awards than any other living artist - return to the States for concerts in Chapel Hill, NC (Oct 10), Ann Arbor, MI (Oct 12), and at New York's Carnegie Hall (Oct 14 & 15).

Celebrating the recent publication of Black Acting Methods: Critical Approaches (Routledge 2017),  Dr. Sharrell D. Luckett will host a conversation with fellow theatre teachers, researchers, and makers, Kashi Johnson and Jonathan Mathias Lassiter, concerning the decolonization of acting methods and pedagogies. While recent conversations tend to focus on norms of representation, this event seeks to explore the myriad eurocentric assumptions that are at play in the formative process of acting, and to present alternatives that stem from African legacies, sensibilities, and experiences. In addition to the public conversation, a closed session for interested actors will take place during the afternoon. Registration to the session is now closed.

The fun of an evening such as this week's 'Michael Kahn & Friends, Off the Record: The Lansburgh Years, 1992-2007' derives from the relaxed, unscripted content provided by those who usually offer scripts to an audience. The three actors and one former administrative colleague who joined Kahn at the Harman Wednesday to visit memory lane required little prompting by moderator Tom Story to recall and reminisce about their work with the Shakespeare Theatre Company during the Lansburgh Years. Once Story asked each to remember his/her first meeting with Michael Kahn, a series of photos of past productions drove the evening of anecdotes.

Ranking up there with MEDEA and OEDIPUS REX, Eugene O'Neill's family tragedy LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT would most likely make any playgoer's list of inappropriate classics to revive on Mother's Day weekend.

Like Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, ANTIGONICK reveals the fate of the characters immediately. ANTIGONICK is award winning poet and Classics professor Anne Carson's reinterpretation of Sophocles' Antigone, part three in his famous Theban plays. Antigone continues the story of eye-gouging tragedy Oedipus Rex, perhaps the most well-known in the Theben plays. Carson's deep knowledge of ancient Greek literature, culture, and history makes her the ideal person to translate and reimagine Sophocles' revered work. She gives the story modernity but holds fast to its universal and still relevant themes of tragedy, grief, and fate. Director Diana Small of Salvage Vanguard Theater puts an experimental spin on Carson's play to make for a truly unique theatrical experience in ANTIGONICK.

The stunning production of Luis Alfaro's "Oedipus El Rey" currently running at the Magic Theatre is visually arresting, genuinely moving, and slyly humorous - oh, and also seriously sexy, all in a taut 95-minute running time. The Magic presented the world premiere of this play back in 2010 and is bringing it back in this new production as a legacy revival. Given the current, unsettling political discourse on immigrants, this revival could not feel more timely.
