La MaMa's International Puppet Series Begins Tonight

Puppetry from the U.S., Japan, Belgium and Colombia will be featured in the 2015 LA MAMA PUPPET SERIES set for today, November 5 to 29 on all four of La MaMa's stages in New York City. This biennial festival highlights new contemporary puppet theatre from many of the world's leading puppet artists during the month of November, including Heather Henson, Ty Defoe, Tom Lee, Koryu Nishikawa V, Loco7 Dance Puppet Theatre Company and Maiko Kikuchi.

The Players" Ring opens its 2015-16 season with "Duck and Cover. "  A "Father Knows Best" family, happily sheltered in 1962 suburbia, tries to maintain their innocence during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the arrival of eccentric jazz trumpeter Uncle Bunny and his African-American musical partner.  "Duck and Cover" runs at the Players' Ring, 105 Marcy Street, Portsmouth, NH from September 4th through the 20th with shows at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 7 p.m. Sundays, Sept 6th and 13th; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept 20th. From February 10-12, 2015, EarShot (the National Orchestral Composition Discovery Network) and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO), JoAnn Falletta, Music Director, will present the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra New Music Readings at Kleinhans Music Hall (3 Symphony Circle, Buffalo). On Wednesday, February 11 at 7pm at Kleinhans Hall, the public will have the opportunity for a behind-the-scenes look at the process of bringing brand new orchestral works to life, as music by the four selected composers is read by the BPO under the baton of associate conductor, Stefan Sanders. The composers – Cody Forrest, Jay Hurst, Yuan-Chen Li, and Scott Ordway – were selected through a national call for scores, and during the Readings will receive feedback from BPO Musicians, Sanders, and mentor composers Robert Beaser of The Juilliard School and artistic director laureate of American Composers Orchestra, Rob Deemer from SUNY Fredonia, and Pulitzer Prize winner Melinda Wagner. Afterwards, the audience is invited to be a part of a discussion Q&A with the young composers, the conductor, and mentor composers.
