May 13th 1985, is now recorded in the annals of history, as this was the day Philadelphia Mayor W. Wilson Goode, approved the dropping of a bomb on a row house in a residential neighborhood. The raging fire that followed claimed the lives of eleven MOVE members, six adults and five children. Among the adults killed was Frank Africa, son and only child of author, Louise Leaphart James. Also lost to her was her brother John Africa. James' book chronicles events that would ultimately lead to so shocking an end. The 2013 'Made in NY' honorees include: Tony and Olivier Award-winning actor Alan Cumming; 'Project Runway' host and executive producer Heidi Klum; two time Oscar-nominated director Spike Lee; five time Tony Award-winning singer and actress Audra McDonald; President of HBO Documentary Films Sheila Nevins; NYC-based blogging platform and social networking website Tumblr; and Harvey and Bob Weinstein, founders of The Weinstein Company and Miramax Films. This year's 'Made in NY' Mayor's Award for Lifetime Achievement was presented to Emmy Award-winning television host and broadcast journalist Barbara Walters. The awards took place at Gracie Mansion and featured a special performance by the Tony Award-winning musical Kinky Boots introduced by Harvey Fierstein.

The CW Network presented its 2013-14 broadcast schedule today to advertisers, affiliates and national media at the New York City Center in New York City. The Swedish DJ duo Icona Pop opened the show with their smash Top Ten hit "I Love It."

Michael J. Fresher has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts (www.tobincenter.org), which is owned and will be operated by the Bexar County Performing Arts Center Foundation. He will assume his new position in San Antonio on May 21. Foundation Chairman J. Bruce Bugg Jr. made the announcement.

PlayhouseSquare honored the founding chair of its board of trustees, Oliver C. "Pudge" Henkel, Jr., and his successor, John F. Lewis, with its highest award, the PlayhouseSquare Star Award for Achievement in the Performing Arts, at its annual Chairman's Dinner on Monday night. Today's 28th annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles saw a massive turnout, with 30,000 participants filling the streets of West Hollywood and Los Angeles. Celebrity supporters, elected officials, and notable AIDS activists addressed the crowd assembled in and around West Hollywood Park before the walkers set out on the route. The event also achieved strong fundraising results, which benefits AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and 29 other important L.A. County AIDS service organizations.

AIDS Walk Los Angeles is the world's first fundraising event of its kind, and the event continues to keep the public engaged in the HIV/AIDS crisis. Last year, a passionate crowd of 30,000 walkers and 2,500 volunteers raised $3 million for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and advocacy programs. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $72 million to fight the disease in Los Angeles County.

Each night during the 2011 Broadway revival of THE NORMAL HEART, Larry Kramer, the author of the script, stood outside the theatre to distribute a letter to members of the audience.

The Castillo Theatre continues its presentation of four winning scripts from the 2012 Mario Fratti-Fred Newman Political Play Contest, selected from more than 200 entries including submissions by playwrights from around the world. The plays are being directed by distinguished theatre professionals and the final production plays tonight, August 27 at 7:00 p.m.
