 OPERA America, the national service organization for opera and the nation's leading champion for American opera, is pleased to announce that Timothy O'Leary, general director of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, has been elected the new chairman of OPERA America's board of directors. He has been involved with OPERA America since 2006, when he participated in Leadership Advance, one of the organization's professional development programs. He joined OPERA America's board in 2011. O'Leary was elected chairman at OPERA America's recent annual business meeting — held during Opera Conference 2016 in Montreal — where eight new members were also elected to the board and three current members were re-elected to three-year terms. 

Opera Saratoga's Artistic and General Director Lawrence Edelson announced today the three exciting new productions that will comprise the company's 2017 Summer Festival, which will build on the company's commitment to producing masterpieces from the operatic cannon, important American works, and works in which dance plays an integral role.

Aimee Garcia joins the cast of LUCIFER on FOX in series regular role of 'Ella'. Ella Lopez is the department's new forensic scientist... and she sure does love her job. Ella is a bit of a walking contradiction.

We're just one episode away from the final episode of Season 6 of Game of Thrones and the penultimate episode entitled “The Battle of the Bastards” premiered last night. Despite what the promos had us believe, we got not one, but two battles this episode, and it was certainly an episode jam packed with death, gore, and violence. All three things we're quite used to on Thrones! Episode 9 of this show has become known amongst its viewers and creators as the big one. It's usually the episode where everything comes to fruition, the climax of the series that has everyone cheering and applauding the show immediately after for its genius and shock. Last year we had “Hardhome,” which was a direct departure from the books and gave us death and destruction, only to have the Night King lift his arms and raised the dead. However, this episode, despite being totally epic in scale and stunning visually, lacked a certain complexity, integrity, and dimensionality that made episodes like “Blackwater” back in Season 2 so rich and exciting. “The Battle of the Bastards” was entertaining and a feat of direction, cinematography, and scale, for sure, but its predictability, cluttered circumstance, and ever so confusing character choices and motivations made the episode suffer as a whole.

Episode two of Game of Thrones just aired tonight and with it, we got a lot of what we had last week, shocking deaths and violence, but we also got the answer to everyone's burning question. Is Jon Snow really dead? The episode, entitled “Home” not only was named so because of the word being dropped quite often in dialogue, but several of our primary characters dealt with their families, identities and “homes”. I would say this is one of the closes instances we've gotten on this show of having the title actually play a key role in the total events of the narrative, but alas, it still struggled to remain thematically relevant, despite it's frequent usage.

The New Vic Theatre and Oldham Coliseum Theatre's world-premiere production of Kiss Me Quickstep, the new play by Amanda Whittington, comes to the Stephen Joseph Theatre next month. Directed by New Vic Artistic Director Theresa Heskins, this piece looks at the real lives behind the fixed smiles and fake tan of the world of ballroom dance.

On February 15, 2016 HAMILTON will perform its opening number live at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. Only eight musicals (nine, if you count RIVERDANCE) have had this honor since the first Grammy Award ceremony in 1959. HAMILTON will make history, yet again, as the first show to perform via satellite during the ceremony; while the ceremony is at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, the cast will be performing on their set at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City.

The interaction between Brown and her equally hardworking partner Catherine Foster portrayed a multidimensional mix of African-American culture and urban girlhood not often accessible to those without a similar background. There was a sense of sisterhood and innocence not often seen in mainstream portrayals of African American youth. However, the piece did not limit itself to depicting the idyllic.
