42nd Street, the iconic Broadway masterpiece and winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1980, is tap-dancing its way onto the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center's Little Theater stage in Charleston, WV from April 26th, 2019 through May 11th, 2019 courtesy of the talented performers and crew of the Charleston Light Opera Guild.

I've never felt quite so transported into the realities of a convent or the freshness of a mountain or the sadness of a man who has lost his wife and is too aggrieved to notice his children. This is quite discombobulating (in the best possible way) considering I've grown up with the movie, appeared in the musical twice and directed it. The singing is sensational. Under the guise of Musical Director Andrew Christie assisted by Vocal Coach Kerry Ackerman the harmonies are on point and the light and shade most definitely in all the right places. Accolades to the orchestra who supported the performers so ably. Michael Potts (Captain von Trapp) has a voice that is almost too big for the senses. He worked it to perfection bringing us near the point of 'overwhelm' then subtly pulling back. Potts took the feelings evoked by the music to new heights. I could literally smell the edelweiss and those top notes - wow. He is a gifted being.

The idea of two companies in one community doing the same show within a few months of each other poses many questions. Sometimes the rights to a popular musical become available and there is something of a feeding frenzy - a dedicated theatergoer could have availed themselves of no less than four productions of Mamma Mia! in this area in the last year. Perhaps they were all stellar productions. I certainly didn't hear any complaints about poor attendance, which indicates either an insatiable appetite for an ABBA jukebox musical or the payoff of careful cultivation of core audience support by each company. In any case, nobody appeared to suffer any ill effects from the repetition.

Lend me a Tenor is an ebullient and highly professional production. The Resident Theater Company have a hit on their hands, and the town of West Chester should be proud to own a tiny slice of Broadway.

The dynamic duo of Sophie Zucker and Ian Lockwood (writers and stars of Baby Ian Fall Down a Well, Annoyance Theatre NY, Peoples Improv Theater), take the stage at the Brick Theater as Fag & Hag in Fag & Hag Pull Out All the Stops, performing Saturday March 31, 2018, at 9:30pm. A performance at the new Brooklyn Comedy Collective, a comedy theater in residency at the Brick in Williamsburg, Lockwood will play Fag and Zucker will play Hag in an over-prepared 1930's revue featuring a gay man and his funny, sad friend!

Irish Arts Center (IAC), the arts and cultural center dedicated to projecting a dynamic image of Ireland and Irish America for the 21st century, presents an exhilarating array of musical programs this spring.

This production of CHICAGO is enjoyable. I was expecting more of an energetic 'umph' from the leads. Without that, I felt the show's energy lacked cohesion from the beginning. It's opening weekend. If they can find that spark, this show will be one hot CHICAGO.

The Centenary Stage Company opens their exciting theatre season with 'The Learned Ladies' now through October 22nd. Moliere's classic comedy has never looked so good. Wonderfully adapted by playwright, Freyda Thomas, the show features the finest direction by Carl Wallnau and an outstanding cast of thespians.

MNM Productions' Company is the latest venture by theatrical producers and arts consultants Marcie Gorman-Althof and Michael Lifshitz. Company is their sixth major musical following A Chorus Line, Side By Side By Sondheim, Hair, The World Goes 'Round and, most recently, Monty Python's Spamalot. MNM Productions' Company will be appearing at the Marshall E. Rinker Playhouse of the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts through August 6, 2017.

Mimi Stern-Wolfe's Downtown Music Productions will appear in a revival of Harold Rome's witty satire Pins and Needles, music direction by Stern-Wolfe, stage direction by Larry Marshall, choreography by Mercedes Ellington,Tuesday October 25, 7 PM, at the Howl Gallery, 6 East 1st Street.  (All proceeds will go to the Actor's Fund and HOWL Help.)  With its critically acclaimed score and lyrics, Pins and Needles,  written in 1937, is a unique call for social justice and equity.
