JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR started out in 1970 as a rock opera concept album with music by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The response to the album was so great that a stage version debuted on Broadway in 1971. Like opera, the musical is sung-through, with no spoken dialogue. Loosely based on the Gospels' accounts of the final week of Jesus life, the story begins with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ends with the crucifixion. Unlike the narratives in the Bible, the show focuses on the interpersonal and political struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus. A large portion of the plot centers on Judas, depicting him as a tragic figure who is unhappy with the direction in which Jesus is steering his disciples. The show contains many intentional anachronisms, including slang and ironic allusions to modern life and attitudes.

Bay City Players will present Jesus Christ Superstar, Lyrics by Tim Rice and Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber.  Performance dates are July 28 - 31, 2016 at the Bay City Players, 1214 Columbus Avenue, in Bay City.   Performance times are 8:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.  Jesus Christ Superstar is Directed by Michael Wisniewski with Music Direction by Loren Kirker Kranz and Jan Sutherland, and Choreography by Holly Haga Bills.

Legendary theatrical sound designer Abe Jacob will be honored for his pioneering career achievements at the Live Design Awards on Monday, June 13 in New York. Another legendary icon, Chita Rivera, will present the award to Jacob, whom she has known since the original Broadway production of CHICAGO (1975).

Today in 2000, the second Broadway revival of Jesus Christ Superstar opened at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts (now the Foxwoods Theatre), where it ran for 161 performances. Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical started off as a rock opera concept recording before its first staging on Broadway in 1971. The musical is based very loosely on the Gospels' account of the last week of Jesus' life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem, and ending with the crucifixion. The third Broadway revival is currently playing at the Neil Simon Theatre.
