REDCAT, CalArts' downtown center for contemporary arts, is pleased to present the World Premiere of Herb Alpert Award-winning choreographer David Rousseve's newest work, Halfway to Dawn, for four performances from Thursday, October 4 through Sunday, October 7, 2018. Written, choreographed and directed by Rousseve, this vibrant dance-theatre work will be performed by his wildly diverse nine-member company REALITY. Halfway to Dawn illuminates the story of African American jazz composer Billy "Sweet Pea" Strayhorn. Relatively unknown, Strayhorn was Duke Ellington's main arranger/writing partner, instrumental to the creation of a vastly important body of work in American music history. Gay, out, and living in Harlem in the 1940's-60's, Strayhorn chose to lead a remarkably private life, allowing Ellington to take the spotlight and much of the credit for their joint oeuvre. The arranger/composer was also a passionate activist involved in civil rights causes (and a committed friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.). The core of Halfway to Dawn is Strayhorn's music as interpreted through a dynamic dance vocabulary melding jazz, modern/postmodern, and social dance forms. A surreal sonic design by d. Sabela grimes surrounds vintage recordings of Strayhorn's songs, while video art by Cari Ann Shim Sham* gives the production a rich visual dynamic. PBS Announces 'Reconstruction: America After the Civil War,' A New Documentary from Henry Louis Gates, Jr., to Air Spring 2019 on PBS

In 1893, social work and public health pioneer Lillian Wald (1867-1940) founded Henry Street Settlement on Manhattan's Lower East Side to serve New York City's most vulnerable people through social service, healthcare, and arts programs. Since that day, Henry Street Settlement has been a crucial force for progressive reform and a leading advocate for social change, serving 60,000 New Yorkers each year. 

The British Museum lent 2,200 objects to 81 venues outside the UK from Toledo, Ohio to Hobart, Australia. In November, India and the World, a history in nine stories opened at CSMVS in Mumbai. Supported by the Getty Foundation and Tata Trusts, this is the first exhibition of its kind, a collaborative partnership between CSMVS, the National Museum of Delhi and the British Museum. Indian objects were selected from collections across India and the British Museum provided global objects to show the interconnectivity of India to the world throughout the centuries. The exhibition received over 200,000 visitors in Mumbai and has recently opened in Delhi.

Bernard Shaw's celebrated humour is featured in his farcical and funny anti-war O'Flaherty V.C. Directed by Kimberley Rampersad, O'Flaherty V.C. comically reveals why the men of Ireland really went to war. This season's Lunchtime one-act begins previews on May 31 at the Royal George Theatre.

The Syracuse University Department of Drama announced the six plays and musicals that will make up the 2018/2019 season. With an emphasis on contemporary work, the season addresses a variety of current issues and concerns as experienced from intimately personal points of view. The season celebrates stories of consequence, while at the same time investigating and challenging the process, implications and impact of storytelling itself.

Written by Emmy Award nominated TV writer, producer, and playwright, Marco Ramirezbrings forth a vocabulary in The Royale that expresses the narrative through physical motion and percussion. The Royale, sponsored in part by Robert Paul & Margaret Kennedy, will be performed in the Outcalt Theatre from May 5th - May 27th under the direction of CPH Associate Artistic Director Robert Barry Fleming.

Pan Asian Repertory Theatre (Tisa Chang, Founding Artistic Producing Director), continuing its 41st milestone season on themes of social justice and historic amnesia, has announced star of screen and stage, writer and historian Eric Bogosian, will lead a talkback panel.

Lawrence Opera Theatre and the Lied Center welcome back KU alum and tenor, Hugo Vera after his debut recital in the Lied Center Pavilion last year. The program, 'Music for a While,' features J. Bradley Baker on piano, and Jen Stephenson, soprano. The recital is at the Lied Center Pavilion on Saturday, April 21st at 7:30pm. A reception follows the program, and admission is free with suggested donation.

Cleveland Play House (CPH) is proud to name Nick Gandiello and Chelsea Marcantel as the recipients of the 2018 Roe Green Award, in conjunction with the 7th Annual New Ground Theatre Festival (NGTF). Each year, the Roe Green Award is given for outstanding achievement in playwriting.  Mr. Gandiello's play Cicada will be presented in a reading on Sunday, May 13th at 7:30 p.m., and Ms. Marcantel's production of Tiny Houses will be offered on Saturday May 19th at 2:00 p.m. As previously announced, Tiny Houses will have a full production run in the Outcalt Theatre March 23rd -April 14th, 2019 as part of the 2018-2019 CPH Season.  CPH Artistic Director, Laura Kepley, will direct both presentations of Marcantel's play.

San Diego Symphony Announces 2018-2019 Season Featuring First Concerts Conducted by Rafael Payare as Music Director Designate, 14 Works New to San Diego Symphony Repertoire,

Rafael Payare's highly anticipated inaugural concerts as San Diego Symphony's Music Director Designate take place as part of the annual January Festival. It will mark his only Jacobs Masterworks appearance this season and will feature acclaimed cellist Alisa Weilerstein and the orchestra's first-ever performance of Benjamin Britten's Symphony for Cello and Orchestra. He will also perform in a special Discovery Night concert on January 10, with all funds from this concert going to support the San Diego Symphony's Learning and Community Engagement programs.

A cappella singing and New Age music align in a fascinating concert entitled Northern Lights presented by the National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorale on Saturday, April 28, 8pm at the Music Center at Strathmore. Philharmonic Chorale Artistic Director Stan Engebretson leads a concert juxtaposing the rich traditions of Rachmaninoff's  Vespers with new sounds by popular Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo (pronounced Yay-lo) and local wunderkind composer Alistair Coleman, currently studying at the Juilliard School. The Philharmonic will also be joined at the piano by these two contemporary composers. In addition, the concert features guests from the Montgomery College Chorus and the Strathmore Children's Chorus. A pre-concert lecture by Philharmonic Associate Director Victoria Gau begins at 6:45pm in the Concert Hall. After the concert, Mr. Gjeilo and Mr. Coleman will join Artistic Director Stan Engebretson for a Member Q&A. Acclaimed Jazz harpist-pianist-vocalist Corky Hale will present a 103rd Birthday Show honoring Billie Holiday on Sunday, April 8 at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood.  Hale is one of the few people still performing who was actually a close friend of Holiday's, playing for her on the 'Stars of Jazz' TV show, and on several recordings and live appearances, and this will be her fourth annual birthday salute to the singer.

The Neighborhood House program of Christ Church Preservation Trust, a catalyst for the arts at historic Christ Church, hosts the International Contemporary Ensemble in a year-long residency to celebrate Christ Church's new C.B. Fisk pipe organ, Opus 150. The residency culminates with world premiere performances of In Plain Air, a work in multiple movements by composers Nathan Davis and Phyllis Chen, on September 22 and 23 as part of the 2018 Fringe Festival.

A hilarious screwball comedy, NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT, is an homage to a host of Jazz Age musicals, which were filled with songs, dances, and outlandish gags---in this musical, it's all set to the superb score ('S'Wonderful', 'Fascinating Rhythm', 'But Not for Me') of George and Ira Gershwin!

American soprano Kathleen Battle's luminous voice has been called '…without qualification, one of the very few most beautiful in the world' (The Washington Post ). Yet beyond the glory of her singing, in a career filled with countless accolades, honors and major milestones, what has perhaps distinguished her most is her almost magical ability to create an unwavering bond with her audience. Returning to Seattle for the first time in two decades, the legendary opera star takes the stage at the University of Washington's Meany Hall on April 14, 2018, to explore traditional spirituals and the writings of Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. She is joined by acclaimed jazz pianist Joel Martin and local choirs The Sound of the Northwest and UW Chamber Singers.

Company One Theatre (C1), in collaboration with American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) presents, Wig Out! by Tarell Alvin McCraney. Karamu House, the oldest African American theatre in the country, presents the American premiere of The Adventures of The Black Girl in Her Search for God from March 22 through April 15, 2018. Performances of this sidesplitting comedy written by celebrated Canadian playwright Lisa Codrington, and based on the short story by George Bernard Shaw will be held in Karamu's intimate Arena Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio. Directed by Nina Domingue, the cast is led by India Pierre-Ingram in the title role and includes Kaila Benford, Robert Branch, Samantha Cocco, Michael Head, Mary-Francis R. Miller, Prophet D. Seay, and Karl Toth.
