Review: FOOTLOOSE: THE MUSICAL at Theatre By The Sea

by Jay Pateakos - Jun 27, 2022

What did our critic think of FOOTLOOSE: THE MUSICAL at Theatre By The Sea? So for the sake of full disclosure, I am an 80's kid at heart. It's the only music I listen to (maybe a little 70's too because of my older sister) and Footloose has always been one of the best 80's soundtracks bar none.

BWW Interview: Matthew Gardiner Helps Two Billys Take Flight in Signature's BILLY ELLIOT

by Benjamin Tomchik - Oct 19, 2018

Audiences familiar with Signature Theatre know that it is not uncommon for Matthew Gardiner to wear dual hats as both a musical's director and choreographer. However, having dual actors tackle the lead role brings its own set of unique challenges.

BWW Review: THE JACKIE WILSON STORY Brings Mr. Excitement Back to Life Using Cutting Edge Holographic 3D Technology

by Shari Barrett - Jul 18, 2018

Due to Wilson's fervor when performing, with his dynamic dance moves, impassioned singing and impeccable dress, he was soon christened 'Mr. Excitement,' a title Wilson would keep for the remainder of his career. His live performances consisted of knee-drops, splits, spins, back-flips, one-footed across-the-floor slides, removing his tie and jacket and throwing them off the stage, and a great deal of basic boxing steps, advance and retreat shuffling, and one of his favorite routines, getting women in the audience to come up to the stage and kiss him. In fact, the only thing Wilson loved more than music, it seems, was women, many of whom you will meet during several interviews about his life included in THE JACKIE WILSON STORY.

BWW Review: Cain Park's Anti-Pollution THE TOXIC AVENGER Will Delight Many!

by Roy Berko - Jun 6, 2016

There seems to be a trend in the choices theaters are making regarding musicals they produce. Maybe it's a desire to attract younger audiences, or it's the popularity of comic book heroes as the subject of television shows and movies, but like it or not, the age of 'unusual' protagonists is here.

BWW Reviews: Ogunquit Playhouse Mounts Regional Premiere of BILLY ELLIOT

by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Jun 29, 2014

Assembling a stellar cast and creative team, the Ogunquit Playhouse has mounted a powerful production of the Elton John-Lee Hall 2005 musical, Billy Elliot. Based on the 2000 film, both directed by Stephen Daldry with original choreography by Peter Darling, Billy Elliot movingly tells the story of a Yorkshire working class boy who discovers his unlikely passion and talent for ballet and who must win his coal miner father's acceptance for his chosen vocation. Set against the background of the bitter 1984 mining strike which pitted the workers' life and death struggle against Margaret Thatcher's push to close the mines, Billy's discovery of his artistic gift becomes his ticket not only to self-fulfillment, but also to escape from his family's bleak existence.
