PITTSBURGH—The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's Composer of the Year for the 2013-2014 season is eight composers—all of them based in Pittsburgh and connected to higher education.

Curtains up! AIR TWYLA propels Pacific Northwest Ballet into its new season with a trio of works by its first artist-in-residence, renowned choreographer Twyla Tharp. The program includes the world premiere of Waiting at the Station with a commissioned score by New Orleans music legend Allen Toussaint. Sharing the program with Waiting at the Station are the Scottish-inspired Brief Fling (a PNB premiere) and Tharp's homage to Ol' Blue Eyes and ballroom dance, the unforgettable Nine Sinatra Songs. Bullins, winner of the prestigious NY Drama Critics' Circle Award and OBIE Award for The Taking of Miss Janie, has greatly influenced American theatre, especially Black theatre. His work, characterized by disdain for ineffective political rhetoric as a substitute for action, most often examines the lives of Black people in the inner city. In 1968, Clive Barnes, writing in the New York Times called Bullins 'a welcome addition to the ranks of New York playwrights.' Four years later, Barnes added 'Bullins writes the way Charlie Parker played: It is all so easy and effortless. It sounds improvised, and yet it doesn't sound improvised, simply because it is the improvisation of formality.' Today, Bullins is regarded as a seminal force in the American theater.

As the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's untimely death approaches, The Road Company Theater will stage Assassins, an American musical that lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate Presidents of the United States. Bold, sometimes disturbing, and alarmingly funny, the Tony-nominated historical musical with haunting songs by Tony-winning composer Stephen Sondheim explores the dark side of the American experience. Assassins will run tonight, September 12 - September 28 .

The program will also include works by Shostakovich and Beethoven.
