SDCF announces the host theatre for its 2022 Lloyd Richards New Futures Residency program: Actors Theatre of Louisville in Louisville, KY. Applications are being accepted now for a Resident Artist, who will be mentored by Actors Theatre of Louisville's Executive Artistic Director Robert Barry Fleming for one year while also undertaking their own artistic projects at the host theatre.

In the end they still managed to produce a show that asks the hard questions, never flinches from the truth, and captures perfectly what it means to be human. Imperfections be damned.

Today, The Lillys announced the launch of the Lorraine Hansberry Initiative, which aims to honor the great American playwright and civil rights leader’s legacy while investing in those following in her footsteps.

You may know about FROZEN coming to the Hobby Center from Broadway Houston, or the Alley Theatre prepping for a new musical by Duncan Sheik named NOIR… but what are some of the gems out there from smaller companies that offer just as much air conditioning and some of the best acting in Houston? I’ve got you covered with four spotlights if you are interested.

Sarah Paulson, Uzo Aduba, Anthony Mackie, Martin Freeman, Nick Robinson, and Hillary Baack will star in a new film adaption of Bruce Norris' Claybourne Park. Tony-nominee Pam MacKinnon is also set to direct the new film. The play premiered on Broadway in 2012, winning the Tony Award for Best Play.

Dirt Dogs Theatre Co. will present the award-winning Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris, directed by Ron Jones.

The season will open with Bruce Norris’ Tony, Olivier and Pulitzer Prize-winning “Clybourne Park,” directed by Kurt Naebig (Sept. 8 – Oct. 9).  It will be followed by Alan Ayckbourn’s feisty holiday comedy, “Season’s Greetings,” directed by Connie Canaday Howard (Nov. 17 – Dec. 18). With a nod to the Cleve Carney Museum of Art/MAC summer 2023 exhibition “Warhol,” BTE will complete the season with Vince Melocchi’s fictional play “Andy Warhol’s Tomato” directed by Steve Scott (Feb. 2 – March 5).

For a moving musical portrait of 1950s Black American life, Raisin is certainly one to see.

A revival of Bruce Norris’s biting satire Clybourne Park still feels relevant today to questions of racial tension and gentrification. 

Pulitzer Prize winning Clybourne Park was fully rehearsed and ready to run at Park Theatre for its 10th Anniversary back in 2020. Covid prevented the revival from materialising but now, two years later, it is finally set to return to the London stage. Actor Imogen Stubbs took time out of rehearsals to speak with BroadwayWorld about the production.

 Skylight Music Theatre today announced the cast and creative team for Raisin, running April 8-24, 2022. Raisin is an uplifting musical adaptation of the award-winning play, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. Raisin won the 1974 Tony Award and the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Musical.

The Vancouver International Film Festival announced this year’s Black History Month programme, taking place at the VIFF Centre throughout February. Black History Month at VIFF offers audiences an opportunity to engage with Black stories from a range of Black voices from around the world, as well as the richness of international nuanced and empowered Black filmmaking.

The Guthrie Theater today announced casting for Lorraine Hansberry’s theatrical masterpiece A Raisin in the Sun, directed by acclaimed Twin Cities artist Austene Van. A Raisin in the Sun will play January 8 – February 12, 2022, on the McGuire Proscenium Stage.

Dallas Theater Center (DTC) celebrates 30 years with one of the city's most talented actors, Liz Mikel. She made her debut on the DTC mainstage in 1991, appearing in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Since then, Mikel has been featured in multiple DTC productions and currently features in Cake Ladies at the Dee & Charles Wyly Theatre as Tweedy-Bird, a character written specifically for her.

Shake & Stir Theatre Co's adaptation of Roald Dahl classic Fantastic Mr Fox will not be going ahead in 2021 and the upcoming season of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, directed by STC Resident Director Shari Sebbens, will be rescheduled into the 2022 season.

Following a delay lasting more than a year, Dirt Dogs Theatre Co. has announced its return to live theatrical performances with their Season 6 lineup for 2021-2022. The season opens in October with a tale of strength, bravery, and beheadings in Lauren Gunderson’s gritty comedy, The Revolutionists

Tickets are now on sale for The Ensemble Company's production of Clybourne Park, Bruce Norris's acclaimed play which won the Tony Award for Best Play as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The Ensemble Company's production will be directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Howard (The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess), who previously directed Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike for the company.

First performed Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, Clybourne Park had prominent productions in London as well as prominent regional theatres across the United States before its 2012 bow at the Walter Kerr Theater on Broadway.  It was nominated for several Tony Awards, winning for Best Play.

The Guthrie Theater today announced its 2021–2022 Season, including the national tour of What the Constitution Means to Me by famed writer Heidi Schreck; a world-premiere adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Lavina Jadhwani, featuring all-new creative design; Lorraine Hansberry’s heralded A Raisin in the Sun, and more.

Natalie King is an accomplished actor, director, and teacher here in the Dallas Ft Worth area.  After beginning her career as an actor, she fell in love with the art of storytelling.  She created a performance company called Universal Connection which toured dozens of elementary schools in Dallas and Mesquite with Young Audiences. 

The former residence of Black lesbian playwright and activist Lorraine Hansberry has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, underscoring Hansberry's incredible contributions to American arts and culture. Her play, A Raisin in the Sun (1959), was the first play by a Black woman to appear on Broadway.

On this day, we celebrate the life and legacy of history-making playwright, journalist, and author, Lorraine Hansberry, on her birthday.
