On Friday, October 30, 2020, composer George Lewis releases the 1984 recording of his Rainbow Family, one of the first live electronics works ever performed at the Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM), on Carrier Records. The tracks were recorded during three days of live performances that took place in May of 1984, the culmination of two years of sustained research and creative work in fulfillment of an IRCAM commission.

Mastervoices Presents CARMEN With Harnick's English Translation

MasterVoices continues its 2019-20 season on Thursday April 2, at the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Artistic Director Ted Sperling will lead a concert staging of Bizet's Carmen in its original Opéra Comique version, with dialogue rather than recitative, sung in English translation by award-winning Broadway lyricist Sheldon Harnick. His translation of Carmen was commissioned and premiered by the Houston Grand Opera in 1981 and served as the English text for Peter Brook's ingenious 90-minute La tragédie de Carmen which was performed at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in New York in 1984. The MasterVoices performance will mark the New York premiere of the full translation.

Composer Roger Doyle To Be Conferred As Saoi By The President Of Ireland

Heresy Records recording artist, Roger Doyle, will receive the honor of Saoi, the highest award open to an Irish artist. Doyle will be presented with the symbol of the office of Saoi, the gold Torc by Irish President, Michael D. Higgins. The honor is bestowed by Aosdána, the state-supported association of Irish artists. The title of Saoi is awarded for life and held by - at most - seven distinguished artists at a time. Doyle will be the twentieth artist to receive the honor since its inception in 1984. Former award-winners include Samuel Beckett, Seamus Heaney, Brian Friel and Louis Le Brocquy.

Mozart's opera of ancient Rome, La Clemenza di Tito, returns to the Met starring Matthew Polenzani in the title role of the Roman emperor Tito, with Elza van den Heever as the vengeful Vitellia, who plots his assassination. Joyce DiDonato sings the trouser role of Sesto, Tito's most devoted friend, who is also in love with Vitellia. The trio of leading artists is reunited at the Met after their acclaimed performances together in the company's new production of Donizetti's Maria Stuarda in 2013. Emily D'Angelo and Ying Fang sing the roles of the lovers Annio and Servilia, Sesto's friend and sister, respectively, and Christian Van Horn portrays the captain of the Praetorian Guard, Publio. Lothar Koenigs conducts all six performances of Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's 1984 staging, which runs March 30 through April 20, 2019.

Ghostlight Records has announced that it will record The Jonathan Larson Project to be released in early 2019. The album will be based on a concert originally presented at Feinstein's/54 Below, directed and conceived by Jennifer Ashley Tepper, and featuring music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Charlie Rosen. The show features the music of the late composer Jonathan Larson, who wrote Rent and tick tick BOOM, the former an iconic Broadway landmark and the latter a beloved musical gem. The Jonathan Larson Project is an evening of Jonathan's unheard work featuring songs from never-produced shows like 1984 and Superbia; songs that were cut from Rent and tick tick BOOM; songs written for theatrical revues and songs written for the radio; songs about politics and love and New York City; songs never before publicly performed or recorded. The album will be produced by Jennifer Ashley Tepper, Charlie Rosen and Kurt Deutsch.

Spark dancers bring this dystopian novel to life through movement choreographed by Artistic Director Chelsea Koenig and Assistant Artistic Director Matt Dittes in collaboration with the dancers. Featuring a transporting original score by composer Justin Reardon, 1984 explores the nature of truth and forbidden love in a world of fear. Custom projections enhance the world-building as protagonist Winston battles the psychological manipulation and physical threats of a totalitarian regime. Audiences will encounter a world of ideas as chilling as they are timely, urging us to question our relationship to language, power and control.

Dancers File Class Action Lawsuit Against Winnipeg Ballet Over Abuse Allegations

Macleans reports that a certified class-action lawsuit has been filed against the Winnipeg Ballet. Dancers allege teacher and photographer Bruce Monk pressured dancers to post half-clothes or nude for photos between 1984 and 2015. Macleans reports the stories form a patter in which dancers were told they would be posing for headshots or portfolios but were then coerced into posing in states of undress.

BroadwayHD premiered The Toxic Avenger Musical at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) to a packed auditorium. The comic musical is based on the 1984 film created by Troma Entertainment. As with many cult films, the original release was not a critical success, but midnight screenings in NYC and around the country propelled the campy low budget movie to become a cult classic.
