In addition to her “Wonderland”—a song conceived of at the Alice in Wonderland statue in New York’s Central Park and co-written with Sprague— she ends the EP with her rendition of Jeff Lynne’s “Mr. Blue Sky,” from Electric Light Orchestra’s 1977 album Out of the Blue. (The music video for “Wonderland” will be released with the album in April).

Saturday’s opening night crowd was all a buzz as they stepped into the halls of the Asolo Repertory Theatre for the opening of their 2022/2023 season. Their season opener being the stunningly beautiful, sexy, and haunting work of Kander & Ebb, and a production none other than Cabaret. This was my first experience at the Asolo, and after what I saw Saturday night, I will be back again and again. First off, let me start by saying that there is truly nothing like sitting in an audience of 400+, with everyone sharing the same excitement, all leading up to the moment the lights descend and we are plunged head first into a world much different from our own, but also very similar all the same.

Even though I was very young, I still remember the tension in the air at school and at home during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. And just today, news of the current Cold War going on between Russia and the rest of the world regarding Ukraine, with even Elon Musk warning the world about possible nuclear war breaking out. So it seems very fortuitous that Peter Knell and Stephanie Fleischmann have created a heart-stopping experience set in a submarine during the crisis of 1962. Their new opera ARKHIPOV is based on the true story of the man who saved humanity from nuclear annihilation during a tipping point between Russia and the United States in the Cuban Missile Crisis. But what motivated them to create an opera about such a terrifying moment in world history? I decide to speak with them and find out.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, the cast of “O” by Cirque du Soleil celebrated its 24th anniversary of impressing audiences night after night, since the flagship production made its debut at Bellagio Resort & Casino in 1998.

Internationaal Theater Amsterdam has announced that director Eline Arbo has committed herself to the theatre as Associate Artistic Director. Alongside director Ivo van Hove, she will be part of the artistic core of ITA. From January '23, Arbo will be appointed Ibsen Artist in Residence, an initiative of the Philip Loubser Foundation, which gives directors with an international ambition the opportunity to develop themselves artistically.

Out of the Box Theatrics announced they will produce the first Off-Broadway revival of the critically acclaimed musical, Floyd Collins. The production, to be directed by Christina Sajous (Broadway’s SpongeBob SquarePants, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, American Idiot; Out of the Box Theatrics’ 2019 production of Baby), will play from November 11 through December 18, 2022.

Lookingglass Theatre Company has announced its 35th Season! A partnership with one of this city’s leading Black theatre companies. A homegrown holiday hearth-warmer. The Juilliard School will hold its 117th commencement ceremony on May 20, 2022, at 10:30am. The ceremony will be held outdoors on the Lincoln Center campus in Damrosch Park, presided over by Juilliard President Damian Woetzel. It will also be livestreamed at juilliard.edu for those unable to attend in person.

Brian May shares a newly-created performance video for the title track of his 1998 solo album Another World – filmed recently in the Canary Island locations where he says he feels 'closest to Heaven.” The video premieres on YouTube today, April 29th.
 The atmospheric song is a highlight of the album, which is out now in a deluxe, multi-format edition in May's Gold Series of reissues. The 2CD and box set formats feature the remastered original album and the Another Disc collection of remixes, rarities and live tracks. 

The Plano Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce Shira Samuels-Shragg will be joining Maestro Hector Guzman as Assistant Conductor ahead of the orchestra’s 40th Anniversary Season. Shira is a young American conductor in her final year pursuing a Masters in Orchestral Conducting at the Juilliard School with highly-sought after conductor David Robertson. This full-time position is funded by a generous donation from Tammy and Charles Miller. Shira will assume her role on August 22, 2022.

JAGGED LITTLE PILL, the musical made from Alanis Morissette (Music and Lyrics) and Glen Ballard (Music) hit album of the same name blends 90’s angsty grunge rock with contemporary concerns with mixed results. 

The Public Theater announced the full line-up today for the 18th annual UNDER THE RADAR FESTIVAL, running January 12-30, 2022. The innovative festival of The Public’s winter season returns to in-person performances at The Public Theater and partner venues Mabou Mines and PS21 with work by artists from across the U.S. and around the world.

CABARET and Theater West End are a match made in the heavens of art direction, so much so that it’s nearly a wonder they hadn’t staged it here til now. The plexiglass partitions even hint at the giant mirror that faced this show’s earliest audiences on Broadway — I caught reflections from performers and patrons on several occasions (including my own) and smiled in appreciation of the unintended nod.

Reflecting its deep commitment and connection to the veteran community, The Atlanta Opera will honor veterans in November with the release of two works centered on Tom Cipullo's Glory Denied, a distinctly American saga about the nation's longest-held prisoner of war, who returns from the jungles of Southeast Asia to a suburban home he barely recognizes.

Anita Kollinger is a standout in a powerful show that features some interesting and questionable interpretations from director Gabe Flores.

In 1941 two leading physicists secretly met in Nazi-occupied Denmark to discuss the race between Hitler and the allies to create the nuclear bomb. These men were Werner Heisenberg, a German working on Hitler's bomb programme, and his old mentor Niels Bohr, a half-Jewish Dane with links to the United States’ nuclear programme. First seen in 1998, Michael Frayn’s fascinating but ultimately frustrating play, Copenhagen, explores several possibilities of what may have happened between the men.

The film was also re-released by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment to own on Blu-ray™ in early April, as part of USC Shoah Foundation’s Stronger Than Hate Initiative. Launched in response to the deadly white nationalist rally of August 2017 in Charlottesville, VA.
