Ballet 5:8, a female and minority-led premiere ballet company recognized for artistic excellence, innovation, technical precision and beauty, will present the world premiere of BareFace at Harris Theater for Music and Dance (205 E. Randolph St.) on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, 2023.

The album was recorded at the 4AD Studio in London, mastered at Abbey Road, and was written, recorded, and produced by Allie Crow Buckley and Jason Boesel (Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes) between a lush cottage in the English Countryside, the sunny mountains of Ojai, California, and the hotels in-between.

“Liminal Spaces would have not been possible without the help of several people—my friend Collin helped produce some songs and engineer sessions, the absolute genius Stephen Kaye mixed the album and recorded the bass for ‘g(url)’ and Dave Cooley (J Dilla, Blood Orange, Yves Tumor, Tame Impala, Paramore, etc.) mastered the album.'

I admire the plucky inventiveness of the San Diego Opera. On an annual budget of roughly three percent of New York’s Metropolitan Opera, it has managed to mount a consistently appealing and entertaining variety of productions, traditional and contemporary, in both good times and plague times. But although it was an enjoyable performance over all, now and then I was glad to be wearing a California-mandated mask so that no one would know I was at the current Civic Center staging of Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte.

A little over a year ago, I attended a performance of Giselle from the Staatsballett Berlin whilst in the knowledge that the next day Corona restrictions would mean a premature end to the run. Fast forward to this year and performances are going ahead under strict “2G” regulations (you must be recovered or vaccinated and wear a mask at all times). Favouring Victor Ullate’s (after Petipa) crowd pleasing Don Quixote over the Christmas tradition of Nutcracker this year, the company tackle the challenge gamely although this particular performance lacked the magical feel that going to the ballet at Christmas should give.
