Grateful Dead to Play Series of Farewell Shows in Chicago

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Grateful Dead, the four original members — Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir — will reunite at Chicago's Soldier Field, nearly 20 years to the day of the last Grateful Dead concert, which took place at the same venue. “Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Dead' will occur over three nights on July 3, 4, and 5, 2015, marking the original members' last-ever performance together. The band will be joined by Trey Anastasio (guitar), Jeff Chimenti (keyboards), and Bruce Hornsby (piano). The group will perform two sets of music each night.

The series begins on Friday, January 30 at 8:00 p.m. with Muti leading a program featuring two portraits of the sea, Mendelssohn's Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture and Debussy's La mer, paired with Scriabin's Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 43, "The Divine Poem," in which the Russian composer's newfound mysticism and fascination with touching all of the senses through music is at the core of an extravagantly scored work.

TV: First Look at Highlights of HELLCAB at Profiles Theatre

For the past two seasons, including the 20th Anniversary production in 2012, Profiles revisited Kern's landmark play for the holiday season. Both productions recevied extended runs and played for over three months. First produced as a late-night show by Famous Door Theatre in 1992, Hellcab was originally scheduled for twelve performances. It ended up running for over nine years, becoming one of the longest running shows in Chicago theatre history. Richard Cotovsky played the Driver for nearly 18 months including return engagements logging in well over two hundred performances to make him one of the longest performing actors to play the Driver during its premiere. Hellcab has been performed all over the U.S. and abroad, including Scotland, Israel, Singapore, and Ireland, winning numerous awards, including a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra's (CSO) fourth CSO Resound recording with Music Director Riccardo Muti, Prokofiev: Suite from Romeo and Juliet, will be released internationally on Tuesday, September 23, the same date that iTunes will begin its exclusive pre-order in the U.S. While scheduled to be released for sale via retail and download outlets in the U.S. on October 14, the CD will be available exclusively in the CSO's Symphony Store, at 220 S. Michigan Ave., at the CSO's Symphony Center home, beginning September 16.

The Zell Family Foundation Makes $17 Million Contribution to The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, at its Board of Trustees meeting today, acknowledged the announcement by Helen and Sam Zell that the Zell Family Foundation has made a $17 million contribution to the CSOA's endowment and general operating funds. This gift provides for the naming, in perpetuity, of the position of Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which has been held by Riccardo Muti since 2010.
