Rafael Payare's highly anticipated inaugural concerts as San Diego Symphony's Music Director Designate take place as part of the annual January Festival. New York City Opera continued its 2017-18 Chamber Opera Series with a unique double bill of Donizetti's Il Pigmalione and Rameau's Pigmalion, the first time these one-act gems will be presented on the same program. The production also marks the New York premiere of Donizetti's first opera. This double was directed and choreographed by Richard Stafford, with Gil Rose conducting the New York City Opera Orchestra and Chorus. Two performances of Il Pigmalione/Pigmalion were presented at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater on Saturday, March 24 at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 4:00 p.m.

Show Boat was first performed on Broadway in 1927 at the Ziegfield Theatre. The musical is based on a novel by Edna Ferber. Show boats, boats that traveled up and down rivers to perform at different towns along the river, are a real part of Americana from the 1800s and early 1900s, but they went out of fashion with the growth of the film industry. Ferber actually spent several days on a show boat in 1924 where she compiled research for her book. At the time, the most popular performing arts pieces were light comedies by vaudeville writers. Show Boat broke the mold with its focus on historical accuracy, realism, and foray into social issues. Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will be bringing Show Boat to Central PA, and Broadway World had the opportunity to interview Kira Galindo, who will be performing the role of Julie.

GOBSMACKED!, the a cappella and beatbox musical, will appear at the Capitol Center for the Arts (Concord, NH) on November 14 as part of a 120-stop North American tour. This performance is the second of several free William H. Giles Concert Series performances during the CCA's 2017-18 season.

Broadway's "Phantom," Ciaran Sheehan, returns to Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston to take on the role of GAYLORD RAVENAL in Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II's 1927 masterpiece Show Boat. Running from July 6-16 for 8 performances only, Show Boat will also star Boston's own Sarah Oakes Muirhead (Sunday in the Park with George) as MAGNOLIA HAWKS.
