The SFCC Spartan Theatre, Bigfoot Drama Club, and SFCC Music Program Presents: Reefer Madness – The Musical Book by Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney Music by Dan Studney Lyrics by Kevin Murphy Orchestrations by David Manning & Nathan Wang Directed by Hazel Bean Spartan Theatre’s Spring Musical Brings Big Laughs and Even Bigger Paranoia in Reefer Madness – The Musical Spokane, WA — Spokane Falls Community College’s Spartan Theatre, in collaboration with the Bigfoot Drama Club and the SFCC Music Program, is proud to present Reefer Madness – The Musical, a bold, satirical comedy that gleefully spirals into jazz-fueled chaos. Performances run for three nights only, May 29, 30, and 31 at 7:30 PM in the SFCC Music Auditorium. Directed by SFCC alum and adjunct Drama instructor Hazel Bean, this high-energy musical takes inspiration from the infamous 1936 propaganda film of the same name. What begins as a well-meaning lecture on the dangers of marijuana quickly explodes into a kaleidoscope of moral panic, dangerous swing music, and exaggerated consequences, all set to a wildly catchy score. The story follows two wholesome teens, Jimmy and Mary, whose innocent romance is derailed by a single puff of “reefer,” plunging them into a whirlwind of hallucinations, crime, jazz clubs, and outlandish temptations. With numbers like the jazzy “Down at the Ol’ Five and Dime” and the show-stopping “Listen to Jesus, Jimmy,” which features a dancing Christ figure and a chorus of Vegas-style angels. Reefer Madness is as clever as it is chaotic. This production features a live student band, a cast of current SFCC and SCC students, alumni, and faculty collaborators, and a fully student-supported production team. It’s the kind of joyful, irreverent theatre that invites the audience to laugh, think, and enjoy the spectacle.
