Following the likes of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Basel Chamber Orchestra in the Sunday Classics series, the Usher Hall presents the world-renowned Bruckner Orchester Linz for a thrilling afternoon of music.

The full drama of Mahler’s all-embracing second symphony comes to life in performance in a way that very few recordings can hope to capture. With enlarged orchestral forces and a 140-strong choir this work is truly epic, offering up the composer’s apocalyptic vision of life, death and the hereafter. The work exemplifies Mahler’s innovative compositional approach, creating a “world of its own” in symphonic form. Such is the piece’s enduring popularity with both musicians and audiences alike, that it was voted in the top 5 symphonies of all time in a survey of conductors carried out by the BBC Music Magazine in 2016.

Bruckner Orchester Linz spans 200 years of tradition and excellence. In the last three decades, it has won an international reputation as one of the leading orchestras of Central Europe. Mahler himself took his first professional conducting job just south of Linz in the summer of 1880. The Orchestra is joined by the Leeds and Sheffield Philharmonic Choruses, both with illustrious histories of their own.

The task of leading this huge orchestra is that of the world-renowned German conductor Markus Poschner. A German Conductor’s Award winner, he is regularly invited to lead the world’s best orchestras, specialising in the symphonies of Mahler, Brahms and Beethoven.

With 200 musicians and singers on stage together performing Mahler’s momentous work in the wonderful Usher Hall acoustics, get ready for a mind-blowing Sunday Classics experience.

Conductor Markus Poschner said:
“The Bruckner Orchester Linz is the second largest orchestra in Austria, its history spanning 200 years of tradition and excellence.
The care and performance of romantic symphonic works – just like the symphonies of Gustav Mahler – is a cornerstone of this tradition.
As its ambassadors, it’s not only an honour but also a privilege, to bring our Mahler to Edinburgh and the United Kingdom this spring”.
