Photo Coverage: UK Premiere of TOBACCO at the Edinburgh Assembly Fringe Festival

The United Kingdom premiere of Sylvaine Strike's TOBACCO forms part of the Baxter Theatre Centre's impressive showcase of six award-winning and cutting-edge productions at the 2017 Edinburgh Assembly Fringe Festival in Scotland this August. Presented in association with Assembly Festival and Riverside Studios, the line-up also includes three plays by writer-director Lara Foot, KAROO MOOSE - NO FATHERS, TSHEPANG: THE THIRD TESTAMENT and THE INCONVENIENCE OF WINGS, as well as Yael Farber's MIES JULIE and the devised piece, THE FALL.

Triple Fringe First winner Andrew Buckland excels in TOBACCO alongside Toni Morkel. The award-winning director Sylvaine Strike once again creates a haunting and side-splittingly funny little gem with this play, with massive artistic impact. Her signature delicate and nuanced style, attention to detail and sublime aesthetic has earned the play several awards and accolades. Buckland plays the role of Ivan, who is instructed by his domineering wife to give a lecture on the harmful effects of tobacco, even though he himself is only a small smoker. What follows is not so much a lecture, as an unfolding of the often hilarious and poignant journey of a man trying to be heard for the first time. The production is an adaptation of Anton Chekhov's monologue "On the Harmful Effects of Tobacco", reimagined in cut-up technique and in collaboration with Franz Kafka, Edward Lear and Andre Breton, amongst others. The adaptation is by William Harding, with set design by Chen Nakar and costume design by Strike herself.
