OVERTONE to Make Edinburgh Fringe Debut From Tom Brennan and The North Wall

OVERTONE, a new play by Tom Brennan, will make its world premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Presented by The North Wall, the production follows two people whose relationship began as teenagers after choir practice. Years later, an unexpected encounter with their former choir director forces them to confront memories and experiences that continue to shape their lives.

Told through a non-linear structure, the play explores the psychological impact of formative relationships, examining how power dynamics, blurred boundaries, and shared history can continue to influence people long into adulthood. As past and present collide, OVERTONE asks what constitutes a healthy relationship and whether it is possible to move beyond the forces that first shaped us.

The play is written by Tom Brennan, whose previous work includes Education, Education, Education, which received a Fringe First Award, and Last of the Pelican Daughters, winner of the Pleasance Indie Award for Best Theatre Production.

Direction is by John Hoggarth, whose credits include The Beasts*, which received an Olivier Award nomination, and Brown Boys Swim, winner of both a Fringe First Award and the Popcorn Award.

“As a Fringe veteran, I want the show to connect to audiences in the ways that my favourite Edinburgh shows have: I hope it is funny, moving, and asks risky questions,” said Brennan. “I've adored the shows The North Wall have produced over the years and am thrilled to work with John and the entire creative team to continue its tradition of bringing impactful and exciting original work to the fringe.”

OVERTONE marks The North Wall's third Edinburgh Fringe world premiere by an alumnus of its ArtsLab artist development programme. Previous productions include Brown Boys Swim by Karim Khan, which won the Fringe First and Popcorn Awards in 2022, and E8 by Marika McKennell, which received both a Fringe First Award and a Stage Award in 2019.

Through its exploration of memory, intimacy, and personal history, OVERTONE examines the ways in which the past continues to resonate within contemporary relationships.
