EDINBURGH 2026: Review: RUARIDH MILLER: AUTOCORRECT THINKS MY NAME IS 'RUBBISH', Gilded Balloon
A sharp and thoroughly Scottish hour
Ruaridh Miller returns to the Edinburgh Fringe for an hour of fantastic comedy at Gilded Balloon.
The Leith-local welcomed the audience into The Penny at Gilded Balloon ahead of beginning his set. He opened up by talking a bit about his Scottish name, his struggles with having it misspelled, and even having his girlfriend’s grandmother insult it after meeting him for the first time.
A lot of the show was centred around guilt when it comes to class, having grown up middle-class with a working class mindset. He explores this through ridiculous examples, from downloading Strava and collecting retro football shirts to his family members buying a Chinese takeaway purely for the foxes to eat
Miller’s storytelling is at its best when he allows these seemingly insignificant moments to spiral into something much bigger. His delivery is natural and conversational which was shown through an unexpected detour in the set, where he detailed his unlikely interest in the Botswana Premier League, and eventually became pals with the Miscellaneous S.C. email admin. Despite the randomness, it showcased Miller’s ability to find humour in the most obscure corners of life.
Despite being a preview show, Miller already had the hour feeling well put together. Nothing felt rushed or underdeveloped, and his ability to respond to unexpected audience interactions demonstrated his confidence on stage.
Autocorrect Thinks My Name is “Rubbish” is a sharp and thoroughly Scottish hour that finds plenty of comedy in class, identity and the strange rabbit hole that everyday life can lead you down.
