Asolo Repertory Theatre continues their season with a wonderful production of “FIDDLER ON THE ROOF”. This timeless Broadway gem, which made its dazzling debut in 1964, holds the prestigious title of being the first musical in history to triumphantly surpass 3000 performances for nearly a decade. The show secured an impressive total of 9 Tony Awards, snatching the titles for both the best musical and best book. If that wasn't enough, in 1971, a fabulous film adaptation swept the globe, earning resounding applause and international recognition.

"FIDDLER ON THE ROOF” was inspired from a collection of short stories penned by Sholem Aleichem. These stories, dating from 1894 to 1914, offer a glimpse into the vibrant and often tumultuous Jewish community living in the settlements of Imperial Czarist Russia at the cusp of the 20th century. Originally written in Yiddish, they paint a vivid picture of a world that was forever changed by the Holocaust, capturing the essence of Eastern European Jewish life. The story follows a struggling milkman trying to uphold his religious beliefs in a world that's constantly changing. His daughters decide to marry men of their choice, throwing their father into a whirlwind. The essence of the story lies in balancing life's uncertainties with the familiarity of joy, tradition, and identity. Tevye, the milkman, points out that without their traditions, life would be as unsteady as a fiddler desperately clinging on a roof for survival.

Asolo's presentation of “FIDDLER ON THE ROOF” drew over 1300 hopefuls auditioning and vying for just 25 coveted roles. Each member of the cast seemed hand-picked and tailor-made for their part (singing, dancing and musicians) as if the theater divinities themselves had a say in the casting process. On top of this, the seamless synergy between the exceptional scenic design by Kate Sutton-Johnson and the hauntingly beautiful lighting design by Phillip Rosenberg elevated the show to a level of absolute excellence. The underlying tones and emotions of the narrative not only played out on stage but reverberated through the meticulously crafted scenery and the evocative lighting, encapsulating the essence of the story.

In "FIDDLER ON THE ROOF," a few standout characters make the story come alive. Tina Stafford shines as Yenta, the witty Matchmaker, effortlessly bringing the old-world charm and humor of Jewish culture to the stage through her clever sayings and mannerisms. From the very beginning, the audience is captivated by the romantic entanglements of Tevye's daughters, a narrative that Yenta never fails to comment on! And at the heart of it all is Tevye, portrayed brilliantly by Jeremy Radin. Radin's portrayal of Tevye is captivating as he directly engages with the audience, breaking the fourth wall in a way that truly resonates with viewers. The director's choice to have Tevye address the audience adds an extra layer of depth to the character and enhances the overall impact of the performance.

The "Tevye's Dream" scene was truly something else! It was a jaw-dropping dream sequence displaying raw talent from the entire cast, demonstrating their versatility and skills. This mesmerizing act, which managed to fill every inch of the stage despite its size, can only be described as the pinnacle of theatrical excellence.

In this theatrical production, each performer embodies both a character in the cast and a skilled musician, seamlessly intertwining their instrumental talents with their on-stage persona. For instance, Linda Bard's portrayal of Chava is enhanced by her mastery of the cello, an instrument that becomes an integral part of her character's presence. Maxim Chlumecky, who brings Fyedka to life, captivates the audience not only with his acting but also with his violin performance and impressive dance skills showcased in the men's dance numbers. This level of multi-talented artistry is consistent throughout the entire ensemble, making every moment of the show a delightful experience for the audience. Even when not in the spotlight, the actors continue to engage, either as musicians adding depth to the atmosphere or as part of the mesmerizing backdrop, creating a visually captivating and musically immersive production.

"FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" is a stellar production that deserves a standing ovation for its exceptional performers. Each cast member shines brightly, bringing their characters to life with palpable passion and talent. It would take pages to adequately praise every single actor's remarkable performance, but believe me when I say, they all knock it out of the park! This show is an absolute must-see, an experience that will leave you awestruck and surely remain a cherished memory for years to come. Don't miss out on the magic of "FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" - it's a theatrical gem! Tickets are still available for Matinee and Evening shows at https://asolorep.org/.
