TheatreWorks continues its commitment to the creation and development of new works with the 2008 New Works Festival. The seventh annual Festival, April 12-20, features staged readings of two new musicals, Girlfriend, a bittersweet pop musical from Todd Almond and singer/songwriter Matthew Sweet, and Unlock'd a musical fantasy from Sam Carner and Derek Gregor, based on Alexander Pope's The Rape of the Lock, and two new plays, Touch(ed) from playwright and actress Bess Wohl, and Joe DiPietro's fascinating political drama Creating Claire.

All Festival artists plan to be in residence for their respective Festival performances. Additionally, audience members are invited to meet all of the writers participating in this year's Festival on Monday, April 14, 7pm during a special artist panel discussion that will give an inside look at what it's like to write for the stage. TheatreWorks will also host Theatre Bay Area's local Playwrights Showcase on Tuesday, April 15, 7pm; the showcase, co-developed by Artists Development Lab and Theatre Bay Area, will feature playwrights discussing and reading excerpts from their new plays. All Festival performances and panels will be held at TheatreWorks at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, Second Stage.
