Masquers Playhouse Presents Black Comedy LOOT 8/21 Thru 9/26
The Masquers Playhouse presents LOOT, a black comedy by Joe Orton and directed by Jessica Holt, from August 21 to September 26.
When the stash from a bank robbery is hidden in a coffin, a pair of thieves must scramble to hide the body from a bumbling police inspector who is hot on their heels. Jessica Holt directs this outrageous farce from Joe Orton, one of the funniest and most subversive writers of his generation.
With LOOT, a riotously absurd and anarchistic comedy, Joe Orton turned middle-class platitudes on their heads. In a short but prolific career lasting from 1964 until his death in 1967, modern satirist Orton shocked, outraged and amused audiences with his scandalous black comedies. "Ortonesque" became a recognized term for the outrageously macabre.
In LOOT, Orton perfected his signature mix of macabre subject matter and outrageous social commentary. He gleefully takes on The catholic Church, the integrity of the police force, and openly defies the strongly-held notion that one mustn't speak ill of the dead.
The cast includes Jim Fye, Drew Ledbetter, AaRon Martinsen, Peter Pinfield and Matt Stevens. Kristin Lane is the Stage Manager.
Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm with Sunday Matinees at 2:30 pm on August 30, September 13 and 20. Tickets are $18 and all seats are general admission. Tickets can be purchased on line at www.masquers.org or by calling (510) 232-4031. The Playhouse is located off of Highway 580 (Richmond Parkway exit) at 105 Park Place, Point Richmond across from the Hotel Mac.
The Masquers will hold a Dinner Benefit performance of LOOT on Thursday September 24. Tickets for the benefit performance are $45 and include dinner at the Hotel Mac.
