Aida, the Tony Award-winning musical by Elton John with lyrics by Tim Rice, will be presented at the Alameda Civic Light Opera, September 9 through 24.

"Like the 1871 Verdi opera, Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida is a timeless love triangle of loyalty and betrayal set in ancient Egypt," states press notes, "Aida is a Nubian princess enslaved to Amneris, the Egyptian pharoah's daughter. Both Aida and Amneris fall in love with Radames, an Egyptian warrior and therefore the enemy of the Nubians. Aida finds herself torn between her duty to her people, her love for Radames and her friendship with Amneris... Fresh from their mega-hit collaboration on The Lion King, John and Rice retained the splendor, theatricality, and poignancy of the original Aida, but modified the tone for the Disney production. While Verdi's opera is solemn, the songs in the new version include reggae, gospel and pop tunes along with ballads."

The Alameda Civic Light Opera cast of Aida includes: Nicole Julien (Aida), Derrick Silva (Radames), Lexie Lazear (Amneris), Joshua Camp (Zosen), Alex Rodriguez (Mereb), Steve Yates (Pharoah), Julia Celano (Nehebka), Jess Martinez (Amonasro).
