Pulitzer-nominee Sarah Ruhl casts a quirky spell on the Orpheus myth with Eurydice, a play the MacArthur “genius” penned after her father’s death as a “love letter to parents.” Without losing sight of its poignant message, Ruhl remixes the legend, sending Orpheus’ fallen wife Eurydice to a through-the-looking-glass version of Hades in an elevator plagued by rain. After losing her memory in the waters of forgetfulness, Ruhl’s tragic heroine re-learns who she once was through anecdotes her dead father shares with her and tries to adjust to being dead in Hades — an oddly comic place ruled by a lollipop-licking Nasty Interesting Man and populated with talking stones and a trike-riding creep. Matthew Byron Cassi directs Chelsea Taylor, Michael Berger, and Darren Newhard in the Woodlawn’s production.
