Utah Opera opens its 49th season with Mexican American composer and librettist Héctor Armienta's Zorro, featuring an all-Latino principal cast led by tenor César Delgado as Diego de la Vega. Set in early 19th-century Alta California, the opera follows Diego as he returns from Spain to find his community under the oppressive rule of General Moncada, ultimately taking on the masked identity of Zorro. The score draws from corridos, boleros, and flamenco, with sword fighting choreographed by Chris DuVal and flamenco by Katie Sheen-Abbott. The opera is performed in English and Spanish with supertitles in both languages.
