TAKES ALL KINDS is Dan Hoyle’s newest piece of journalistic theater — a funny, urgent, and deeply human portrait of American democracy in turbulent times. Drawing from immersive reporting across the country, Hoyle brings to life the voices of everyday people thrust into extraordinary civic moments: a formerly conservative preacher’s son turned Florida schoolboard activist after his daughter comes out; Atlanta votingrights canvassers who rekindle hope with stories rooted in the Jim Crow era; a former gang member in Missouri working to deprogram violent extremists; barbershop philosophers in Las Vegas; and many more. With his signature blend of humor, empathy, and razorsharp observation, Hoyle channels the real conversations he encountered on the front lines of today’s political and cultural divides. The result is a 75minute tourdeforce of embodied storytelling — tender, searing, and unmistakably American.
