Review: CINDERELLA at Dixon Community Theater
Experience the magic through May 3rd
Audiences can never get enough of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, as evidenced by its continuing popularity since its 1957 premiere. It’s always a feel-good choice, and Dixon Community Theater leans fully into the show’s warmth, humor, and heartfelt message of kindness. From the opening moments, Lydia Smith directs Cinderella with magic that respects the classic while imbuing new life onto the stage with whimsy, laughter, and refreshing sincerity.
It may be a little different than its Disney counterpart, but this Cinderella boasts a recognizable Rodgers and Hammerstein score. It’s comforting and familiar, and some strong voices do justice to great numbers like “Impossible” and “The Prince is Giving a Ball.” At the center of it is Ella, portrayed with a lovely balance of gentleness and resolve. Taylor Quist captures her optimism and sweetness, and her vocal performance shines in “In My Own Little Corner.”
Alex Chaseford as Topher is a standout in his own right. He highlights the prince’s awkwardness and uncertainty, which makes his empathy for the villagers seem sincere. His vocals are reminiscent of Bill Shirley in “Once Upon a Dream” from Disney’s 1957 animated Sleeping Beauty, giving authenticity to the fairy tale feeling.
The rest of the cast adds energy and humor, creating a lively world that’s brimming with hope, even during the darkest scenes. The creative staging, props that pop, and beautiful costumes evoke the fairy tale setting we’re looking for. I was eagerly anticipating the awe of the horses and carriage, and the designs by Kelly Pidgeon James, Lydia Smith, and Anne Ryle exceeded my expectations.
Cinderella succeeds because it brings magic to life. Seeking out hope and beauty is always relevant, and it feels like a fresh breeze in these times of division.
Cinderella plays at Dixon Community Theater through May 3. Tickets and more information may be found at www.dixoncommunitytheater.org.
