Program Five of the 2026 Bard Music Festival, Rivalries and Conspiracies, presents selections from two one-act operas written in the same year by rival composers: Prima la musica, poi le parole by Antonio Salieri, with a libretto by Giovanni Battista Casti, and Der Schauspieldirektor by Wolfgang Amadé Mozart, with a libretto by Johann Gottlieb Stephanie. Both works explore the comic tensions and behind-the-scenes intrigues of opera itself, making them natural companions for a festival dedicated to Mozart and his world. The performance takes place at the Sosnoff Theater at the Fisher Center at Bard College, with a preconcert talk preceding the program.
