Bard SummerScape presents Richard Strauss's seldom-staged 1928 opera The Egyptian Helen, conducted by Leon Botstein with the American Symphony Orchestra and Bard Festival Chorale, in a new production directed by Christian Räth. Soprano Hailey Clark stars in the title role alongside tenor John Matthew Myers as Menelaus, soprano Jana McIntyre as the sorceress Aithra, mezzo-soprano Deborah Nansteel as the Omniscient Seashell, and baritone Blake Denson as Altair. Based loosely on a play by Euripides, the opera follows Helen and Menelaus as they navigate jealousy, guilt, and illusion in the aftermath of the Trojan War, with Räth approaching the work as a psychoanalytic journey into the female psyche and the contradictions of love and marriage. The production is sung in German with English supertitles and runs for five performances at the Frank Gehry-designed Sosnoff Theater at Fisher Center at Bard College.
