“Garden of Alla”, directed by Lorca Peress, is a critically acclaimed one-woman show written and performed by Romy Nordlinger telling the true story of trailblazing Golden Age actress and LGBTQ+ icon Alla Nazimova. An immigrant fleeing Tsarist Russia, she went on to NYC to become a Broadway legend, the highest paid silent movie star of her day, and one of the first female directors and producers in Hollywood. Her infamous Garden of Allah mansion on Sunset Boulevard was a haven of sexual, intellectual and artistic freedom, hosted the who’s who of literati and glitterati. She defied the moral and artistic codes of her time that eventually forced her into obscurity, and her captivating story has all but been written out of the history books - until now.
The play, a hybrid of theatre and film, envelops the performer in a sumptuous black and white silent movie world with video design by Adam Jesse Burns, annotated by an atmospheric sound score by Nick T. Moore. Most recently, the production at LA's Theatre West produced by Anne Leyden and Benjamin Scuglia garnered rave reviews and an LA Drama Critics Circle Award nomination, as well as Robby Award nominations for Best Actress (opposite Elizabeth McGovern and Amy Brenneman), Best Video Design, and Best Original Musical Composition. Garden Of Alla has played all over the states and in many off off off Bway theatres in NYC and this production marks its Palm Springs debut
