MAINE STATE MUSIC THEATRE is thrilled to announce its second production of the 2024 season, the iconic Broadway musical FUNNY GIRL. In an unprecedented move, MSMT has been granted the exclusive rights to produce this beloved show following the conclusion of its Broadway tour, making MSMT the first company to bring Funny Girl to Maine audiences after its Broadway run.
Funny Girl follows the inspiring and tumultuous journey of legendary comedian Fanny Brice as she rises from the Lower East Side of New York to become one of the biggest stars of Broadway's Ziegfeld Follies. With an original book by Isobel Lennart and a timeless score by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, including unforgettable hits like "People" and "Don't Rain on My Parade," Funny Girl celebrates resilience, ambition, and the power of the human spirit.
Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark expresses his excitement about this historic production: “We are honored to be entrusted with bringing Funny Girl to the Maine stage. Fanny Brice's story is one of triumph over adversity, and we believe it will resonate deeply with our audiences."
Directed and choreographed by Kenny Ingram, who helmed last year’s hit for MSMT 9 to 5: The Musical, Funny Girl promises to capture the heart and spirit of the original Broadway production while infusing it with fresh energy and creativity. With its rich history and timeless themes, Funny Girl will delight audiences of all ages.
Leading the cast of Funny Girl at MSMT are Jenna Lea Rosen (Fanny Brice), Douglas Williams (Nick Arnstein), Tyler Johnson-Campion (Eddie), and returning crowd-favorite Sue Cella as Fanny’s mother, Mrs. Brice. Rosen recently portrayed the leading role of Mabel Normand in Mack & Mabel, starring Dermot Mulroney in Los Angeles, as well as a wide variety of television, film, and voiceover credits.
The cast also includes Mark Aldrich, Tommy Betz, Joe Capstick, Mary Beth Donahoe, David Girolmo, Tauren Hagans, Michelle Beth Herman, Charis Leos, Jeremiah Valentino Porter, Mandie Rapoza, Alexander Rios, and Juson Williams.
Funny Girl also marks the mainstage debut of the MSMT Singers for the 2024 Mainstage Season: Karoline Brechter, Thomas Dalceredo, Jessica Hoadley, Calista Jones, Nate Krohmer, Christian Miller, Lav Raman, and Mark Tran Russ.

Interview: 'No Spiel...The Show Must Go On!' - MSMT Panel Explores FUNNY GIRL
July 06, 2024 “We battle with other theatres to get the rights for shows. We always try to get MSMT on the national radar as much as we can and get first rights if possible, but it is very competitive,” explains Curt Dale Clark, Maine State Music Theatre’s Artistic Director, as he recounts how the Brunswick theatre managed a virtual coup for this 2024 season by becoming the first regional theatre to receive the rights to produce FUNNY GIRL after it closed its recent revival on Broadway. “In the case of FUNNY GIRL, Concord Theatricals was holding our money for a show that we planned to produce in 2020 before the pandemic shut everyone down. Since they do not return money, they were eager for us to choose another show from their catalog and clear their books. I agreed if they would give us the first rights to FUNNY GIRL after the Broadway show closed.” Clark is sharing his thoughts with the audience at MSMT’s second Peek Behind the Curtain on July 3 at the Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, where he is joined by actors Sue Cella, Douglas Raymond Williams, and Michelle Beth Herman, as well as panel moderator, Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold.
