North Carolina Symphony Presents Free Summer Concerts Across the State

This summer, the North Carolina Symphony will present eight free outdoor concerts in communities across the state. Beginning with a program featuring several all-American favorites, May 31-June 4, and including the Symphony's popular Independence Day concerts, July 1-4, and "Pops in the City" in the Raleigh Amphitheatre, Sept. 9, these performances collectively labeled "Concerts in Your Community" are a gift to the people of North Carolina to launch the Symphony's 80th year of service to the state.

The first set of free concerts feature Music Director Grant Llewellyn and Resident Conductor William Henry Curry in a program of lively orchestral favorites. Concertgoers in Tarboro, Chapel Hill, New Bern and Jacksonville will enjoy Leonard Bernstein's Overture to Candide, Scott Joplin's The Entertainer, music from Antonín Dvo?ák's "New World" Symphony and more, before a heartwarming finale in Copland's An Outdoor Overture.

These performances, titled "An Outdoor Overture," take place on:

Thursday, May 31, 7:30 p.m., Town Common, Tarboro
Friday, June 1, 7:30 p.m., Southern Village, Chapel Hill
Saturday, June 2, 7:30 p.m., Tryon Palace, New Bern
Monday, June 4, 7:30 p.m., Riverwalk Crossing Park, Jacksonville

A month later, the North Carolina Symphony and Associate Conductor Sarah Hicks present a good, old-fashioned salute to the red, white and blue with patriotic favorites and high-spirited classics honoring the USA on its birthday. Concertgoers in Fayetteville, Garner and Cary should arrive early to grab the best views of some of the state's biggest Fourth of July fireworks displays.

The Symphony's three free "Independence Day" performances take place on:

Sunday, July 1, 8:00 p.m., Festival Park, Fayetteville
Tuesday, July 3, 8:30 p.m., Lake Benson Park, Garner
Wednesday, July 4, 7:30 p.m., Booth Amphitheatre, Cary

Finally, the Symphony invites Triangle residents to an evening of great live music in downtown Raleigh. The Raleigh Amphitheatre hosts "Pops in the City," a festive outdoor program featuring music for every taste, Sunday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. As an added bonus, Music Director Grant Llewellyn appears for the first time at Raleigh Amphitheatre to lead the orchestra.

The summer concerts help launch the Symphony's 80th anniversary season. The indoor concert season begins on Friday, Sept. 14 in Raleigh's Meymandi Concert Hall. Llewellyn leads the orchestra and guest pianist Gabriela Montero in "Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody," including Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2.

Other classical music highlights throughout the 2012/13 season include, in venues throughout the state: Ravel's Bolero, Shostakovich's "Leningrad" Symphony, a February commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade and a centennial celebration of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring.

The Symphony's 2012/13 Pops Series features tributes to the music of Ray Charles, John Williams and Disney, along with visits by Grammy Award-winner Kenny G and jazz/Latin/pop super group Pink Martini. The popular Young People's Concerts in Raleigh offer parents and kids a "Halloween Spooktacular," as well as collaborations with the Enchantment Theatre Company and Canada's Platypus Theatre for "Tales on Enchantment" and "Rhythm In Your Rubbish," respectively.
