Into the Woods at Mt Hood Repertory Theatre

Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s acclaimed musical Into the Woods opens August 7, 2026, at Centennial High School in Gresham.

Cinderella wishes to attend the festival. Jack wishes for a better life. A baker and his wife wish for a child. Each character enters the woods believing that getting what they want will finally bring them happiness.

But getting the wish does not end the story.

At the center of Into the Woods is a deceptively simple idea: wishes have consequences. Every choice echoes forward, often affecting people and circumstances far beyond what anyone intended.

A mash-up of familiar fairy-tale characters and celebrated music, the story takes some dark turns. The production explores questions that remain deeply relevant today. What happens when individual desires collide with the needs of a larger community? How do we take responsibility for harm we never intended to cause? What do we do when right and wrong are no longer easy to identify? And how do people find a path forward after grief, fear and failure?
