Portland Ovations is pleased to present the Grammy Award-winning Kronos Quartet at Merrill Auditorium on Thursday, November 4th at 7:30 p.m. The presentation features string quartet repertoire influenced by and/or written by composers from around the world. The concert is preceded by a free lecture providing background information about the award-winning quartet and their amazing efforts to promote new music.

For over three decades,  Kronos Quartet has explored and expanded the range and context of the string quartet. Their breadth and creativity has sparked collaborations with many of the world's most extraordinary composers and eclectic performers. Their adventurous repertoire encompasses works by 20th-century masters such as Bartok and Shostakovich; contemporary composers like Terry Riley and Franghiz Ali-Zadeh; jazz legends Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk; and artists from even farther afield like Jimi Hendrix and Asha Bhosle. Their program for the November 4th concert, Music Without Boarders, is a showcase of this expansive repertoire, featuring music from Ethiopia, India and Palestine as well as other culturally rich and exotic corners of the globe.

Immediately preceding the concert, Ovations Offstage presents a free lecture entitled Kronos Quartet: Thirty Years on the Cutting Edge in the  Merrill Auditorium Green Room. The lecture occurs from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and is presented by Dr. Rob Lehmann, Director of the Strings Program at USM School of Music. Dr. Lehmann explores how the Kronos Quartet's status as one of the world's leading advocates for new music has re-defined what string quartets can do.

Portland Ovations' presentation of Kronos Quartet is graciously sponsored by J.S. McCarthy Printers with additional media support from The Portland Phoenix.

Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. concert range from $36 to $42 and can be purchased by visiting PortTix, the Merrill Auditorium Box Office located at 20 Myrtle Street in Portland; or calling 207.842.0800. Tickets can also be purchased through Ovations website at www.portlandovations.org.
