PHILIP'S GLASS MENAGERIE Presented by CoHo Productions as Part of the Fertile Ground Festival
![]()
A gentleman caller, a collection of fragile glass animals, and Isaac Lamb as a Southern Belle in a big dress! Elements of silent film, physical comedy, and the music of Philip Glass highlight this poignant, hilarious and whimsical telling of Tennessee Williams' story of family facades, dreams of escape, and the reality of the everyday.
This workshop production is adapted and directed by CoHo's Producing Artistic Director Philip Cuomo and performed by members of the CoHo Clown Cohort. Supported by a Creative Heights grant from the Oregon Community Foundation, the CoHo Clown Cohort was created to cultivate an experimental ensemble of clown performers and recontextualize clowning in the contemporary theatre. Philip's Glass Menagerie explores whether or not Williams' emotionally intimate story can be told truthfully and powerfully through the extreme physical, and often comical, expression of clowning.
For 22 years, CoHo Productions has pioneered artist led co-production as a model of creating theatre. Each season, CoHo solicits scripts and project proposals from Portland's community of theatre professionals and selects three to produce in partnership. The artistic vision is democratic, reflecting the tastes of the Portland theatre community from the ground up. Seasons are diverse and unpredictable; the sole quality nurtured and insisted on is excellence.
